…and now it’s raining (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
Now its blowing 50 mph gusts…but I got finished!!! Sort of…well not with the challenge.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-embarassed.gif) but moroe importantly, the base is ready!!!(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Yes I missed the challenge, but this was by far the higher priority. Now I can move forward with an outside layout that will be free of the clutter that stalled the garage project. I gave myself the artificial deadline of this years challenge to get the layout base ready, I will post a dedicated building log in the Tracks forum later today.
As for the Pola station, I will work on that over the spring and summer. Part of the issue was that I realized after opening it up that there were missing doors and windows and that appropriate replacements from Pola would be way over the budget. I can fabricate a new roof, but doors and windows in a Pola kit have to match or it doesn’t look right. Also the roof will have to be recovered in shingles and I haven’t got a source for that yet. Also as I said, this is a BIG building for me, it won’t fit on my tiny workbench and will have to be put back together on a workbench in the garage/yard area. So thats definitely a summer project.
I still have the chimney…
Yeah…I did get kinda distracted there didn’t I (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)
Anyway love everyone’s work on the challenge this year, congratulations to everyone who managed to participate, can’t wait for the voting.(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
You’re just a whiny butt aren’t you. Wind, rain, blah blah. . .Look great vic. I really like it a lot. And considering your normal mode of Large Scale RR modeling this thing will be an empire with all that space.
That does beg the question. Are you going to model with the same parameters as you do the pizza’s; with tight curves and close clearances? I would love to see what you could do in that much space considering what you do with a 30" or smaller circle.
Can I make one suggestion though. . . I think if you were to plant a bamboo plant in the layout say in the back corner it would look fantastic. . .(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)
But bamboo has a way of taking over any space given to them, planted in a corner , a year or 2 later it is at the other end of the yard!

There you go, that’s the joke Devon presented, oh yes Devon can be a sick person …

Yeah…I think I would rather trim my fingernails with a blowtorch than deal with anymore bamboo (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-yell.gif)(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
Pete,
I am not sure how closely you followed Vic’s build log. I am pretty sure that he would rather be waterboarded and have his toe nails pulled off with pliers at the same time before dealing with bamboo ever again.
Vic I laughed when you posted on the final pics thread. You certainly worked harder than anyone else for the challenge. And you used block, didn’t quite turn into a chimney. I think when MIK came up with this idea he had not planned on someone actually building their RR for the challenge.
Thanks Devon, I honestly thought I could juggle the two, but once the challenge started and I got a good look at that station I knew it would take alot longer to sort out, so I gave myself that deadline to push myself to finish the raised bed instead. In the end I’m glad I did so, because it’s so much better out there now. I don’t think Dave is too happy but I’ll make it up to him next year (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)
I bet Dave will get over it if you have a railroad thatcus larger than a pizza box to show for it.
In our next episode: does Vic’s track plan survive contact with reality?

Should be good, it’s a simplified version of the layout I had in my garage years ago. From many years ago…
I remember that video. I also know that model railroad layouts are mutable - especially track plans.
Mine underwent a significant alteration a couple years ago when I tacked in the ‘distance eating loop’ on the outer loop. Now, i’m giving serious thought to merging the inner and outer loops, making one huge tangle (1 33 degree and 4 90 degree crossovers). It should solve a few issues.
I’ve reduced the track plan to adjust for outside conditions. Indoors I could get away with more sidings because everything could be made very tightly. Scenery could be vertical almost. But outside I have to leave more open space to allow for supporting substructures, stonework and landscaping.
Update for Dave Taylor, I haven’t forgot the chimney, its found a new home.
4 Piko walls from ebay, a plywood deck and asphalt shingle roof and the 2020 Miks Challenge is complete, yes, its not on the station I started with, that thing is HUGE though, and honestly I do not think I will be able to find a place for it on the layout. So it’s still disassembled in a box.
So finally bringing this years challenge to a close. to quote that Jerry guy “What a long strange trip it’s been” (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
(edit) old photo deleted for updated pic see below.
Updated photo showing the completed structure with a repurposed lighthouse as industrial brickworks. I think it needs a loading dock now (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)
Maybe jack up the building to loading dock height, wouldn’t have to do anything to the small office or the old light house would be great, give a purpose to the building but as is also looks great, nice repurpose
Thanks Bill, thats pretty close to what I was thinking as well.
Well… Well… Well… I think that you could put to use some of the leftover Taylor cut stones… would look good to raise it up to deck height…
