USS Kitty Hawk CV 63 in Heavy Seas

Date: Friday, January 30, 2009, 11:31 AM USS Kitty Hawk in Western Pacific.
It’s not often you see an aircraft carrier take waves over the bow.
To put it in perspective, [b]the deck is 102 feet off the water when docked.
You can see the ship shudder when it slams into the wave crest (camera wiggle).
You can bet the flight director was wishing he had parked that chopper a lot further aft.

Been there, done that.
1966 Gulf of Tonkin, USS Keasarge.
Typhoon.
Waves over the flight deck.
The only time I got seasick during my short career.
Escorts were actually disappearing under the waves and popping out the other side.
What Phun!

Usually during a storm, all aircraft are tucked away inside the hangar. Why that Hornet is out, know one knows. You sure as hell don’t do Ops during that weather.

Can’t imagine all that saltwater would be good for the electronics or any other part of that craft. “Hey Flyboy, You take it out for a test ride. I’ll grab the next one”

Surfs up dude!
