Use of Tack boards?

They are on the models we buy ,and in the pictures we see. I model them on the equipment I build, but how were they used ?
I believe my understanding of them is correct, in that they were used to attach the bill of lading, but maybe not.

Were the bills of lading attached when the car was filled ?
Did the bill of lading stay attached to the car till it got to it’s destination ?
Why were there tack boards on the ends of the cars as well as the side ?
And if differant RR’s used the boards on the sides but not on the ends ( or vise versa ) why install them to begin with ?
Were they used to hold bad order papers for the shops ?

 If anyone knows, or can guide me to, the info I seek on this matter, I would greatly appreciate their sharing the knowledge.

I should add I model in the 40s.

Dave;

I’ll inquire into how the CPR used those tack boards, with a friend that is old enough to know…

Tact boards are used for a variety of things; Bad Order Tags, Do Not Hump Signs, Unload from this side only/Unload from other side only, Home Shop Tags. I’m sure there are more, but that’s all I can think of at the moment. Some of the ones I mentioned go on the ends and signs, while others are seen only on the sides. I think they are still used for attaching bills of lading. I recall seeing a few on lumber cars. Hope this helps. Here’s my home shopped car.

Those Do Not Hump signs get frequently ignored by switchman. :slight_smile:
