Use of cypress

I have been asked to remove 13 cypress trees from behind a self storage place. i was thinking of using the wood for ties and buildings after it has cured. Any thoughts?

Cypress doesn’t grow here in the mountains, but I know one thing: it’s very expensive. I sure as heck might try to figure out how to use it if it came to me free.

Have a look at this site. It seems that old growth Cypress is ideal for your situation. Just don’t get caught cutting any down, if you can find any. If the trees you have to remove are not old growth they are still okay to use but not as rot resistant.

You can also consider Ipe`or White Oak.

I used Cypress for the posts for the railings on my back deck. They’ve been there for 40 years. There are suppliers around here that sell it, mainly for the Mushroom industry. They use it for the beds in the mushroom houses.

Your link is bad,I wasn’t able to check the site

Cypress is good stuff, nice and rot resistant too. It can be splintery you may need to prepare drill for spikes and such.

Tanks for the advice. I plan on taking the trees down sometime next month. There about 30’ high. I’ll cut the trunks about 20" long, split them and let them dry for a year before I start cutting them.

Get some anchorseal or at the very least some latex paint and seal the ends after you cut them to minimize the splitting.

Didn"t think about that, thanks Devon.

You can get anchorseal at woodcraft if you have one close and I think its better than paint. Its more of a wax. And my payment for the suggestion is a nice little block of it for turning (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif), I will pay for shipping.

Ok Devon. As soon as they give me the word I’ll send you a chunk.

Yep and if he keeps it in his southern environment it will work well! However that is only my opinion .

You’re in rare form even for you. Are you working on getting that rating issue fixed by finding a way to offend everyone(http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)
