USA's #6 switch

Has anyone reviewed this monster?
If you did, did you notice if the frog was to high like the Aristo’s?
Thanks
Sean

There were some comments on it over at the other place a few years ago when it came out. Some liked it better than the Aristo. It’s almost a dead-on knock-off of Aristo except for the control box and the way the frog is powered.

Aristo’s #6 doesn’t have the frog problem - That’s the Wide Radius switch. #6 has had issues with frog shorting and problems with the micro-switch that controls the frog power. I’ve had neither issue with switches outside for 3 years. My biggest problems are pine needles and ballast gumming them up.

Actually the Aristo #6 does have a frog problem, but completely different from the WR. In short, the geometry of the frog, in particular the positioning of the frog point and the width of the throat, allows wheels to drop down into the throat and cause excessive wear on the wing rails and the frog point, which worsens the problem. Symptoms are lots of noise, wheels being “grabbed” by “falling in” and finally derailments.

There is a reasonable fix for this, with the Train-Li insert, $4.

The shorting between the frog and the other rails can be eliminated by a thin piece of styrene to keep the rails from touching the frog.

The microswitch and other wiring is a lost cause in my opinion, if it happens to you, use a different arrangement.

See my site for detailed info and pictures.

Thanks Greg - I wasn’t aware of that. My #6’s must not get enough use to be showing the problem.
