USA Trucks with Bachmann wheel sets

Will they work??

David,

Looking on the USA Trains web site where parts are listed they have a part number for Arch Bar freight trucks. At $5.50 I am assuming that they come without wheel sets. I am looking for an alternative to their wheel sets.

Bob C.

Hmm.

I thought I once saw a standard for axle and journal dimensions for Gauge 1. Now I can’t find them (on-line).

Here are caliper measurements of a single sample 31mm (wheel diameter) wheelset (1 axle, 2 wheels). Bachmann item # 92421, pkg. of 4 wheelsets.

Overall axle length: 69.43mm (2.734")

Major Axle diam (measured on outside of wheels) : side A: 7.46mm(0.294"), side B: 7.35mm(0.290")

Minor Axle diam. (at journals): Both 3.00mm (0.118")

Length of minor diam. axle ends: Side A: 6.59mm (0.260") side B: 5.59mm (0.220")

Major axle length (measured on outside of wheels) 57.44mm (2.262")

Wheel back to back: 39.62mm (1.560")

The back to back is a little tight on this sample. (G1MRA says 1.574" minimum.)

Comments, TOC ?

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Bob, David, and Joe: I have used several different wheel sets and truck frames with success. Now I try for the old style Delton Sprung Truck frame and use SanVal (no longer available) or Raymond wheels. I have also used Bachmann wheels with out problems. The only thing with the Delton frames I need to file off the raised boss on the inside of the axle hole so the axle will roll freely. I put a bit of LaBelle plastic compatable grease in the holes whan I assemble the trucks. For Web sites, go to NMRA (www.nmra.org) and G1MRA (guageone.org) and check it out.

Paul

Just to clarify,

Major axle length + the two minor axle ends = Overall axle length. (If my measurements and math are good.)

57.44 + 6.59 + 5.59 = 69.43mm give or take. (Calculator totals 69.62 mm)

Only reason for ? was I’m not sure. Mr Austin answered though…Wonder if they work with the Barber S2…I do know that the Barber from USA and Aristo are different in design but not sure about wheel sets. I have interchanged Aristo and USA Delton style trucks. Haven’t worked with Bachmann.

They sure do. This is a USA boxcar and reefer (USA arch bar trucks) both with Bachmann metal wheels:

And here’s a kitbashed USA flat (USA Bettendorf trucks) with Bachmann metal wheels:

Just be sure to use the “Large” Bachmann metal wheels and not the “Small” Bachmann metal wheels. The small metal wheels might be too small to run effectively with USA trucks, meaning the trucks or wheels might rub on something. Below are links to both of Bachmann’s metal wheel sizes to help clarify: Bachmann Large Metal Wheels Bachmann Small Metal Wheels

The Bachmann small metal wheels will usually work in arch bar trucks. Here they are in Delton/AristoClassic trucks in this ore car -

Give the trucks a nice low slung look. -Brian

Thanks everyone for your responses. Just what the Dr ordered!!

Conversely - The USA wheel sets will not fit in Aristo trucks without modification of the truck journal. I think they fit the Bachman stuff, but I can’t remember for sure.
