USA Trains boxcar

Howdy
At the Invasion this weekend, Fred had one old USA trains boxcar. It was wood sheathed, but had stamped metal ends and doors. Ive rummaged around and it doesnt seem to be in their catalog anymore. Anyone know about it, or, more importantly, have a couple, even bodies, they want to get rid of?

Bob,
What road name was on it, or was it a re-paint by Fred?
I’ve got some old USA’s. I’ll dig them out and take a look.
I do know that LGB introduced their first composite like that this year–an SP narrow gauge. I ordered one the other day. So they are bound to re-paint the sucker in every road name, like they do everything else they make.

His was a CN, from what I recall. I dont think it was a repaint.

The Older uncataloged LGB 4190 “Sprite” and 4090VW Boxcars (made only one year-1991) was this type of car. As was the 4090 LG&B (1990-93) and 4290VW (Limited Edition 1992) Boxcars. LGB is using the same molds to make the 43900 SP Composite Boxcar this year.

Interesting, Ill have to see one of them in person to see if its usable for the Super Secret Evil Project ™ I have in mind. At about $68 street price, getting 2 of them to cut up is a bit pricey. Thats why I was hoping to find some older ones for cheap.

Interesting! Thanks for clarifying that. So the SP is a re-paint. I’ll see if I can find some of those old LGB’s for my re-painting project.

You can find the LGB 4190 “Sprite” and 4090 LG&B Boxcars used on eBay in the $30-$40 range.

Yes, the SP is a repaint, but LGB hasn’t used the molds since 1994. And yes, I have one on order also.

Hmm, that one might work. The doors are slightly different, but I think they’ll work. Thanks for the pointer!

Bob, I picked up this USA car the other day for a repaint project. I thought it was all wooden. I completely spaced out the door when I looked at the car in the box:

It turned out to be a composite:

So then I looked at some other doors USA has on their woodies. They are all the same size and can interchange with each other:

The plain wooden one can be easily made with some styrene. Bottom line: If you look for wood-sides with the steel type door, chances are it may be a composite. There’s a couple on e-bay now. I may get one to make sure. jb
