USA Crane Unassembly for painting

I have a USA Crane that I want to paint, but can’t figure out how to remove the crane body from the crane car chassis…

Any help would be appreciated, as I really would like it to work after I paint it…

It swivels on the car, but I don’t see any screw to detach the crane from the car chassis…

thanks

Mine is apart but I’m at work. If you don’t get an answer I’ll get a picture for you tomorrow.

I’d like to see the picture too… I’ve been working on the same crane, in fits-and-starts, for the past several years. I can’t remember if I ever took it apart…but…I have equipped it with outriggers. I just learned where to mount the missing brake wheel, and have ordered a ratchet and pawl for it.

I was able to get the lettering removed, and am leaving it in the grey colour it came in. I am using an old Kalamazoo tender, to act as the fuel and water car. The boom car is a redecked B’mann flat, with a cradle for the boom. Kadee 1906/820’s are very easy to mount, on both the cars.

It is a good car for kit bashing, but lacks any great detailing. It could be equipped as a pile driver attachment.

Using a NWSL “Magic Carpet” power truck, and controls put in the tender, it could be made to be R/C battery, self propelled, if wanted.

For me, it is just moving scenery, but is a nice project to work on during Winter hibernation.

BTW…for all intents and purposes, it is 1:22.5 scale, but can pass ok for 1:29, no-mater what USTrains tells you.

Actually Fred I believe it’s 1:24 as all the work train series was that scale

I figured it out…

Well that’s good cause I plain forgot to take a picture…

Sorry.

To get the Crane body off the flatcar, you have to unscrew the frame under the flat car chassis… Once the frame is removed, you will see a ““Clip”” that is holding the swivel post of the crane… Remove the clip, and the crane body lifts off the flatcar…

If you want to remove the drums and floor from the crane casing, you have to be gentle and pry apart the outer crane casing. Be real gentle… I did not separate the crane casing shell, only pried it apart enough to get the floor and drums unit out of the shell.

At least, that’s how I did it…

good luck

Just curious Andy Clarke… You have any way to get photos of it? If not able to upload any here, can you send photo to my e-mail and I post them for ya. [email protected]
Like to see how it made due to we don’t have one yet to rebuild to something else we want to do.

Noel, I haven’t/didn’t take any pics of it… Didn’t think about it, really…

Give me to the weekend, let me see what I can come up with…

TK’s Andy… no hurry. Just curious.

Sorry, I forgot to take the pics…

To remove the crane from the flatcar body, first you have to remove the black undercarriage from the flatcar body.

After removing the Black frame, in the center, you can see the black pin that comes thru the flatcar body, and is holding the crane on with a C type lock ring… Slide to C lock ring off the black post, and the crane lifts right off the flatcar body…
