UP Big Boy 4000 Involved In A Wreck!

It seems that the engineer and fireman were inattentive and BS’ing about their second favorite topic…women…when their locomotive plowed into the rear end of another train stopped ahead. (Photos of the accident provided by the law firm Dewey Cheatham & Howe)

The conductor and rear brakeman of the stopped train luckily saw 4000 coming and bailed out of the caboose. Cars went flying.

Jens got his new Big Boy last week and I went over on Memorial Day for a run session. We had a great time in spite of the wreck. Once Jens calmed down (quit freaking out :D) we picked up the pieces and surveyed the damage. Seems the worst was a nice divit in the rails where the locomotive wheels kept turning after it came to a stop half off the tracks. He was running 102 cars behind the Big Boy when he had a coupler failure…while we were talking about other things and didn’t notice. Below is a few more in a more favorable light…

Even though it was cold (46 F) and rainy we had a great time being boys playing with our toys…

Yeah right—he was jumping with glee if I know Jens.
OBTW----Nice pics!!!

How did that SPS boxcar end up on the log? Skycrane?

Looks like it is time to get after the knapweed, again.

How many pics did Jens take?

Believe me, at first he was freaking… Once he calmed down and realized his baby was still in one piece then he got out the camera and took a few pictures.

The cars are as they landed during the wreck. Unfortunately we did not see the collision…but it must have been a banger for the SP&S car to go flying as it did. Also the two cars down by the locomotive were apparently dragged there. Without half of it’s cars the train was most likely moving at quite a clip when it hit the caboose.

Yeah, Jens likes wrecks, but his baby is just too new for him to appreciate it…yet.
