Large Scale Central

Unique compact switching - this would be a show idea

Hi all,

In another thread I mentioned the “2007 Model Railroad Planning” issue - and its lack of large scale samples. Amongst the layout ideas is an unusual item about the Harlem Tranfer Co. operations.

The sample layout is intended for HO and to fit on a 4ftx8ft sheet; very nifty prototype design which has quite a few possibilities to be used as a display layout even in 1:29 at a show. BTW all the incoming/outgoing traffic arrives and leaves by barge on the Harlem River.

I made note of that article, too. Min. radius 90', just over 3' in 1:29: with selective compression, R1! Mentions real-life problems of sideswiping on the two-track curves, and car-length restrictions. Sooo ... if I make that drainage ditch outside the back fence the Harlem River ... or Hell Gate ... But seriously, Harlem Transfer has great possibilities for intensive switching ops, and MRP has run other dockside and industrial articles over the years with similar limited-space potential. As for lack of large scale in MRP, I guess we'd better get building and writing ...

I imagine there is a lot to be said for that thought!

Yes, but while I like to write and draw that kind of “stuff”, I also pick my publications. “Clambake” is not on my list.

BTW they are looking for layout suggestions, too. I thought this years issue was a bit slimmer than previous ones. And not everything needs to be built in natura.
