Union Pacific FA-1s on the CP

Just saw that Polk’s have the UP FA-1s on sale and was wondering how I could fit one into my CP themed layout then ran across this. In the early 60s rather than reinstitute some available steam the CP leased Union Pacific Alco FA1’s and FB1’s, which were rumoured to have been pulled from the scrap line by UP. They ran in southern Ontario between Cartier and Smiths Falls in all-UP consists on mainline freights, often in A-B, A-B-B or sometimes in groups of 4 due to poor reliability. Here, UP FA1 1616 and FB1 1636B pass by Guelph Junction station on the Galt Sub, white extra flags waving and a whisp of that classic Alco exhaust beginning to erupt. - See more at: http://www.railpictures.ca/?attachment_id=16939#sthash.klyi0Ee2.dpuf

Gee, pulled from the scrap line. So if you buy the FAs from Trainworld, you would need to dirty them up quite a bit. I saw the sale, and wondered…but my lead engineer reminded me that we already have too many of them newfangled, cantankerous, diesel-lectric thangs on the property.

With the previous sale on the PRR FA1, and this sale on the UP FA1, a railroad just starting up, could have a nice roster of motive power for a lot less then the going rate.

Good item to use for the Shark project :

Naah. You can never have too many of them Maynard!

Sean, I have an SP FA1 just waiting for Shark project…when it happens.

Rooster, steam rules here. Dem darn diesels don’t.

This is true. You need many spare units for the inevitable breakdowns.

Oh, so one dismal can do the work of 2 steamers, but it takes 2 dismals to do the work of one dismal. Ok, I got it.
