Large Scale Central

Unfriendly PayPal

After almost ten years of trouble-free use of PayPal with many thousands of $$$$ having changed hands via their system, and totally out of the blue, I got my account limited. Trying to sort it out took a lot my time, and in the end, proved to be a fruitless exercise.

Then, today, I got this -

Dear tac foley,

We emailed you a little while ago to ask for your help resolving an issue
with your PayPal account. Your account is still temporarily limited because
we haven’t heard from you.

We understand it may be frustrating not to have full access to your PayPal
account. We want to work with you to get your account back to normal as
quickly as possible.

What’s the problem?

Reference Number: PP-001-150-393-382

My response -

YOU put a limiter on my PayPal account for reasons I cannot determine - I’ve used your services for years, NEVER reneged on a deal, NEVER failed to pay up instantly, and I MEAN instantly, and NEVER had a bad thing said about me - 100% record on ebay, remember?

And out of the blue you whack me with a ‘limit’.

The problem IS that whenever I try and sort it out, I get sent back to the first page of your site - THAT’s the DAMN problem.

So I gave up on it.

I don’t have the problem now. I just don’t use PayPal any more.

You can go whistle up a pipe.

Check with PayPal, there are scammers out there.

I agree with David, but it may not be easy. It’s very difficult to find a telephone number for most internet business. Emails often get responded to with canned answers. It can be very frustrating trying to communicate.

EDIT: Just went looking at my Pay Pall account and under Contact Us there is a Call Us link that provides a PIN Number and telephone number. I’m not sure you can call the 888 number from the UK, but they might give you an international number.

No, it’s real, I checked with PayPal UK.

Well that’s a bummer. I’ve acquired 80% of my large scale stuff from EBay sellers and never have had a problem either.

I gave up on PayPal a long time ago. My account was “locked” because of a “scam.” I could never get it unlocked because no one at PayPal could solve the problem. I took my money elsewhere!

When I get an email from a business about “My Account” I NEVER click on the link in the email. I go to their site through my Bookmark then check if there is a problem. FWIW

Thats right David.
Never ever use a link sent to you by email that you haven’t requested.
Too many crooked people out there trying to get your money anyway they can.
And others just want to make life rough on you, even though they don’t know you.
David

And for Tac’s problem. There might have been a breach in PayPal’s security.
PayPal seems to be, it works great or it don’t work at all.
I had 1 problem with them it seemed to take forever to get it resolved.
I never use a CC card with PayPal, just a bank account I use just for PayPal.
When I buy something I go and put the money in for that transaction only.
Then I go on line and do the transaction.
That way if someone dose get in the account there is no money for them.
I know there is no system that is fool proof, but that is as close as you can get.
David

I see that eBay has found a new source of getting your funds. They now want 9% of the final bill including the shipping costs ! And then Pay Pal which eBay owns, will take a piece of your money too including shipping costs.

Just seems not right for both eBay, PayPal charging a %age for shipping as we all who bid will pay the costs eventually. Just plain GREED .

I have cut way back on bidding anyway as I can take it or leave it on eBay. Unless the bidding is so low that I can’t resist, oh well you know the rest of the story…

Your story different ? Let er rip----

I noticed it was up to 9%. Didn’t notice that it included shipping too.
That does kinda suck. But they’ve put a stop to the Bozo’s who charge little for the item and outrageous shipping to screw eBay.
A few screw it up for everyone.

Bingo!

I buy more from Amazon, less from ebay

i only buy from ebay-germany. german laws don’t allow the exclusive connection of ebay with paypal.
so one can buy through ebay, without being forced to submit to the paypal ursury.

Daryl,

This practice needs to be brought to the attention of the FTC. By Federal law, it is illegal to make a profit on shipping, PERIOD. I have been involved in arranging shipping for companies I have worked for, and SHIPPING must be a pass though. IF it is clearly stated that the charges are SHIPPING AND HANDLING, there is not much you can do, however I am not sure of the fine details there. However, the way all the items are listed on the item, there should not be any profit as it is listed as SHIPPING ONLY.

Bob, here it is, Copied from my eBay;

“The Standard Final Value Fee rate for Auction-style listings stays at 9% and is now applied to the total amount of the sale—including shipping—with a maximum Final Value Fee of $100.”

Ebay is trying to act the big banks and get more than they deserve even if it hurts. My thoughts and yours could be different.
