Unexpected Gift

Just wanted to share my good fortune.

The mailman pulled up at the gate today and honked a few times, the dogs and I walked out to see what it was about. He handed me a box with Train World markings all over it, what the heck, I haven’t ordered anything from them in months. Rolling the box over I saw the return address, from an old friend where we used to live, now even more perplexed I walked back up to the shop and opened it up.

Wow!! Inside was a beautifully detailed and weathered tank car with a brief note, “from an old friend to an old friend” This thing is gorgeous, and of course fits right into my short line/logging railroad, which hopefully will get rolling again someday soon.

Anyway a few pictures of my friends beautiful work.

The Shasta Pacific will rise again

Very nice! Is it scratchbuilt?

That is a very nice friend. Beautiful work

Pretty sure that is a Bachmann Spectrum 1/20 tank car. Great paint weathering!

Great gift, great friend. Good looking tank car.

Awesome gift Rick.

did the delivery take so much time, or was it weathered before sending?

looks really nice.

Nice. Now you have even more motivation to get the Shasta Pacific back up and running…(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

You should get that tanker into the paint shop, before it rusts away. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-innocent.gif)

Beautiful work. You have a nice friend.

Wow that is awesome! I’ve gotta start making some friends. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)

Great car !

NICE!

Think that qualifies for a 'Way Cool!" And interesting ladders on it. Wonder if they are prototype, freelance, or protolance.

Yes it is a Bachmann Spectrum framed tank and the ladders are stock.

The only thing I have to do is change the couplers to KD’s(http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-laughing.gif)

First of all…it is probably a B’mann tank car, NOT as so many seem to be calling them lately, tanker…and yes it is quite a good model of one type,of tank car used on the D&RGW narrow gauge railroad. “Experts”, please correct me if I am wrong. Yes, the ladders are very much prototypical. It has been very well weathered. The trick now will be to letter the car, and maintain the great weathering job.

The media has started using “Tanker” as the name for just about anything that holds a liquid, but used to be reserved for ships, and highway vehicles. "Tank Car, is the original name for such rail cars that are used for carrying liquids. Let’s not let the uneducated, lazy, media types influence our knowledge of railroad practice, on a web page forum, supposedly devoted to model railroading, and the knowledge of railroad practices.

If I can be proven wrong; please let me know; I’m very much human, and I can very easily make mistakes.

Soon as you start making friends, let me in on the secret of how to do that!

Fred,

I too believe tank car is the proper term for railroad liquid carrying rolling stock. (http://largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

What can I say, I’m a sailor. I will probably continue to call them “tankers.”

What ever you call it, its beautiful, and I wouldn’t even try lettering it. Just enjoy it as is. It does, sort of, still have the White Pass logo on it, so maybe its on loan from the White Pass.

Exactly my thoughts. To try to letter over this would completely destroy the look and I certainly

don’t want to do that.
