Unemployment

Not trying to incite any blusterous arguments here, but I found this interactive map very interesting…

Very interesting but so true. I know that in our area the construction industry is dead. I have closed my cabinet shop and moved all my machinery home due to the economy. My wife and I are looking at different things to do, but I’m glad she has a great job, she’s a teacher.

Chuck

At least we have gone from red to purple but most would say we are still red!
That is an interesting map.

Seems obvious that agriculture and whatever the folks in the Rockies do for a living are the industries to be in!

That, and a good deal of the map that shows “ok” is in “Fly-over” country where the population density is the lowest…

http://www.census.gov/dmd/www/pdf/512popdn.pdf

Unfortunatly the “official” numbers do not include the self-employed mechanics, consultants electricians and cabinet makers, nor the folks that are off the unemployment insurance rolls that are out of work or underemployed just to earn something. That may press this number closer to 25%, than 10%.

Gee I haven’t had a paying job since 1990 so I guess there are many of us that are not included in those low numbers of unemployed.

I not looking for work and I hope it doesn’t find me either !

TOF

My wife lost her computer job because her job was eliminated. She took early retirement so she is not considered unemployed. It’s only money!

I have a serious complaint about that interactive map - that arrow comes back when it is done and it blocks seeing where my family lives. I’m right on the edge of it myself.

But, hey , out here in the middle of the country we are of no value, aren’t we.

nothing could be further from the truth...

We have had a "socialist " so called government(?) for a while now , so I can safely say–things are going to get worse in your country .
I never thought I would live to see such a great country as The USA get itself into such a decline through being lied to .
As a great American once said “You can fool some of the people all of the time” etc . Seems like some of you still are fooled . Sad .

Mike

Dear Friends and others - I’ll take my life in my paws here, as far as some members of this forum are concerned, but I’m qualified to have my opinion heard by virtue of my deep and abiding love for the USA.

I echo Mike’s feeling here, and my heart goes out to you all.

Canada is just next door, remember, and we are in it too…in what…well to be a bit blunt; DEEP HOT SHIT…
Through greed, and all sorts of other reasons; we have seen our counties go from producers of whatever we need to live, to countries that are dependent on the rest of the World. We used to produce steel, and finished products…we now ship our raw products offshore, and buy them back as finished products… We used to proudly brag in ads, “Buy American”…now every one of our once proud “North American” Industries, ship “Jobs” off to Mexico, or China, just to save big bucks.
Our Unions have demanded big money for every job, forgetting that there is a limit to what can be expected. We as average people, all want big automobiles, and all sorts of consumer toys…so we expect big wages for doing minimal jobs…
…there are falts in the system all over…so now we are paying the real price.

I may be “Safe” in my lifetime, but I fear that within the next 30 years, there will be changes…“Changes” like you never want to see…no mater who or what government is either elected or takes over the counties of North America. You can speculate what is going to happen…but, no mater what you think…it will in all likelyhood, be far worse…

We can’t blame the governments we elected…we all contributed…every dammed one of us…we are all humans, and suffer from the same “GREED”, in varying degrees…so, the only question left, is: “WHAT IN HELL ARE WE GOING TO DO ABOUT IT”, besides blame one or the other political parties, for the troubles we all brought on ourselves…?

Some may go back to churches in droves to pray for salvation…egads, what BS…If there is a “GOD”, he/it/she, already gave us the tools to make or break the World we were given. Praying is not the answer. That “God” is probably “Up there”…or wherever it is supposedly sitting; watching what we are all doing with the “Blessing” it already gave us…probably laughing at our stupidity, and our “Nerve” to be praying for more…but such is the greed of the human animule…!!!
This whole thing may be a never ending “Test”, of the human animule…and so far we are all failing badly…Oh…you said what ?..forget that thought…we are all guilty…no mater what GREAT ? religious group you support…or what party you vote for…or what rear end you kissed last year…or how much you donated to the church or party last night…

You might not agree with anything I've said in this sermon.....that is your right....but think about it a while, with a completely open mind; not influenced by what some cosey group has led you to believe........then sit back and YOU suggest what is/has happened, not just to North America, but to the World.....then don't suggest praying.....make a firm suggestion as to what we all can try to do to save what we might be able find left on Earth. We were supposedly born with all the tools.....so suggest how we all can start using them to build a better tomorrow, for ourselves and future generations.

Oh boy…I’ll bet I get shot down by religious zealots, and political animules over that tirade…
…but then in a free World, which we all brag about living in; I’m free to share my thoughts…at least I think I still am…

I’m also free to sit back, and watch the storm that is sure to hit this thread.

Bob; our friendly and tolerant host, has asked, and rightly, also DEMANDED that politics and religion, NOT be discussed on this Web Page…so let’s stick by his rules.
I’m sorry if I did take a step in that direction, but my intention is to look for suggestions of “Solutions”, not to promote any religion or political party.

I have to agree with the above. Greed is what’s gotten us into this mess. I’ve been self employed for nearly 30 years so I fall into the above “underemployed”. I’m glad '09 is in the rear view mirror. The greed lesson hasn’t been learned by a lot of people, these folks think we’re going to get back to the old get whatever you want, pay for it later, mentality. Just today I was with a Realtor that has referred LOTS of work to me over the years. With us was a Grout cleaner, color changer guy who said " I have to charge $90.00 to caulk that tub because last year was lousy and I have to make up for it"??!!! It was down hill from '07 thru '09. Anybody in construction who says they haven’t been affected by the situation is a liar. If people like the grout guy don’t put '09 behind them and start charging fair rates for services they’re going to find themselves living under an overpass. America needs to return to a country that produces and exports goods not one that relies on imports. We used to build and sell goods that Americans as well as European’s wanted to buy. Off the top the only company that comes to mind is Ford. They’re producing a decent quality product that people want to buy. The unions need to wake up and make more concessions or they to will be looking for a place under an overpass.
Well, I feel much better!
Thank You!

Greed is good! It is how we get better more useful products, and services at a better price, with better service, if the crap products and poor service is not rewarded and allowed to take it’s natural course and go by the way of the Tandy Computer.

Hi Guys:

I was reading a real estate article of FORTUNE magazine today. As an example, Miami real estate is projected to decline a further 30% this year of 2010 ! Is the American taxpayer going to cover further Bank losses ?

Apparently General Motors owns NBC television. Somewhere around 33 Million payout to Conan O’Brian courtesy of the American taxpayer?

Up here in Canada at Walmart, I purchased a stainless steel bodied microwave with an internal turntable at regular pricing for 60.00 . Sit back and think about it. 60.00 . That makes absolutley no sense. Ridiculously under priced. How can any consumer electronics and future automotive production occur in North America ? It can’t. Remember when a fridge, stove, air conditioner and a VCR was a major house hold purchase? Today’s the latest VCR equivalent costs pocket change. Fine as long as no one needs to be employed in the manufacturing sector. The North America manufacturing sector’s replacement was to be intellectual industries such as software. That went to India. Like who didn’t see that coming? Sending a file from one desk to another is the same as sending a file over the Internet from India to Microsoft USA. The Ottawa “Silicon Valley North” has moved to China. Massive layoffs. Were it not for the Federal Government hiring, Ottawa would be a ghost town. England placed its hopes on the financial services sector. Massive layoffs with the financial market collapse.

Both the Canadian and American Governments really didn’t think these issues through. Corporate profit gained the ear of our Governments. I don’t understand how our Governments expect our societies to prosper. At least Canada still has the resource sector as the corporations can’t relocate the world’s resources.

We all wanted lower priced consumer goods and demanded the removal of protective tariffs. The removal of protective tariffs killed manufacturing jobs with slave labour salaried competition and the reduced government tax revenue needed to be replaced with higher personal and consumption taxation levels yielding an overall net zero gain. But free trade is good for us!

Now the Amercian President is seeking a 40% hike in the value of the Chinese currency. Buy your trains now.

Presently our College teachers have voted to walk out on strike. Their present salary is around 100,000.00 max. Yes that is correct, 100,000.00 . Our society has just avoided another Great Economic Depression and in this fragile economic environment they vote to strike. Obviously, there is an endless magical supply of money from the taxpayers.

The economics of our society are no longer balanced.

A second Great Economic Depression was narrowly avoided, probably delayed, with a massive debt load passed onto the next generation. I think the private American Banking system should have been allowed to collapse. A Federal Government Banking system should have been set up prior to the private American Banking system collapse as a temporary meassure. The Federal Government Banking system could then later be purchased by private investors thereby not passing a massive debt onto the next generation. But then many Federal Government connected wealthy individuals would no longer be wealthy. So middle class America saved them.

How to deal with all this stress ? Immerse oneself in various hobbies such as model trains.

Norman

Hmmmm, time to buy our little house in Port Orford, eh?

You have your Generals mixed up. It is General Electric that owns NBC. No Federal payout to Conan. Ralph
