TVRM Railfest & Southern 4501

The restored Southern 4501 made it’s debut at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum’s Railfest this weekend.
The first public run of the 4501 since 1998.
I took a lot of video. Here’s the first one.

Beautiful to see her in steam again. My Dad worked on the 4501 back in the 1960’s and 1970’s during the early days of the TVRM. We lived in Chattanooga at the time and if memory serves me right co-workers at the local Dupont factory where my Dad worked were helpful in getting the TVRM started. The name Paul Merriman comes to mind as one of the founders. Thanks for the memories.

4501 on the turn table.

The Southern 4501 is sure looking and running good.
The crew at TVRM did a great job.

Dennis, I never did get any shots on the turntable.
When I drove over to East Chattanooga on Sunday, the gate was closed.
I should have took some Saturday, when the gate was open.

These photos are from the first run on Sunday. Had the first seats in the RDC car right behind 4501’a tender, stayed on the RDC car to take the photos on the turntable. Wanted to try and get the overhang of the engine on the turntable. Someone told me they only had 6 inch to spare on each end for the wheels.

Norfolk Southern delivered the North Carolina Transportation Museum’s Southern 6133 to Railfest a day late.
Here she is at the Missionary Ridge Tunnel on Sunday.

Probably one of the best sounding horns on a diesel locomotive.
Loud and very clear

Hard to tell, but was that RDC helping with the power or just along for the ride?

For a powered boxcar, it wasn’t a bad sounding horn…

And I like the colors.

Ken yea, its a nice looking powered boxcar. And I like the multi-chime horns a lot better then the single tone ones. And they didn’t mess that covered wagon up by putting ditch lights on her.

The RDC was blowing some smoke. Maybe she was acting as HEP for the other passenger cars. I don’t think a covered wagon would need a push with a train that short.

Yea, that’s kinda what I was thinkin.

The RDC may be providing HEP for the other cars.
Or it may just be providing it’s own power and AC. I’m not sure.
But I know it’s not helping pull the train.

They’re working on getting the RDC out of the consist.
They’ve delayed restoration on the 610 so they can restore a coach to replace the RDC.

Up close as the SOU 4501 crosses Chickamauga Creek.

Nice, too bad the freight happened by out of the frame; kinda stole the approach audio.

Nice videos Ralph. Thank you

Work is keeping me too busy, so I’m a little slow getting the videos uploaded.
Here is the Southern 4501 coming through the 1858 Missionary Ridge Tunnel.
