TV Show recmd: Great American Railroad Journeys

I have been watching this show and will give it a very high recommended rating. It’s a British show with journalist and former politician Micheal Portillo as host, using a 19th century guidebook to America he travels various routes still extent to discover the old and new America, he brings a genuine enthusiasm and articulate intelligent commentary to each episode. There are two seasons, 2016 and 2017, both are excellent but I’m going to recommend season 2 first as an introduction to his style. As it’s more approachable.I have been watching on YouTube and will post a link to ep 1 of season 2

Season 2 first half is St Louis to the Grand Canyon on the original Santa Fe route, the second half is St Paul to Memphis.

Season 1 first half is NYC to Niagra Falls along the water table route, second half is Philadelphia to Jamestown.

Link to season 2 ep1, check it out when you have time

Dear Mr Portillo. Some say the greatest Prime Minister we never had. A highly intelligent and articulate man. Also the guy who saved the famous scenic Settle - Carlisle rail route when he was a government minister. Traveled there on a steam excursion couple of years ago, up near the 3 cylinder 4-6-0 engine - spectacular…

If you can, check out his other series that this has been spun off - Great British Railway Journeys (more still being made) and Great European Railway Journeys. I think the guy’s got a job for life. BBC Worldwide is planning a subscription service so these are the things that will probably be made available there. BBC iPlayer (their archive streaming service) can’t be got outside of UK, unless you use a sneaky proxy server with a UK ip address. Max

Hi Max, yep, Great British Railways is next on the Roku, the only thing I don’t like about Mr Portillo is his fashion sense, little hard on the eyes

Ignore it…we do…( He has a great sense of humour…you need it wearing those colours!!!) (http://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-tongue-out.gif)but at least he IS smartly dressed unlike a lot of presenters)

He’s probably the best on railways on TV and does not treat viewers as children having things explained to them like a few others I could mention on satellite channels etc.,.

Portillo was born in the UK. His father, Spanish, was a Professor at Santander Uni. N.Spain.
