Any pictures/ideas for frontage/abutments to tunnel entrances???. I am looking for pics of the older wooden style abutments or entrances. Any pictures out there of yours to get some (as Paul Tuttle would say) Iders? Thanks ahead of time. The Regal
Jerry, I have a couple pics of wooden tunnel portals along the San Diego & Arizona RR. You can find them here:

My own portals were based on them.
Jerry,
Just make sure that you have width and height enough to run a 1:20.3 thru. (as in a K)
You may not own one now, but what the future holds--------???
Ive seen so many portals on friends layouts where if the loco doesn’t fit, or scrapes, the caboose becomes a wide vision as the cupola is taken off!

Are those the guys with too much rolling stock but a lack of measuring implements??
I hope John is referring to the ones who build for a starter set, then add some larger 1:20.3 rolling stock later on. My question is when do they realize their mistake? Right before the locomotive enters the tunnel, or right after the stack falls off?
I’m planning a mountain with three or four tunnels. My tunnel size will depend on how large it has to be to keep the cats from getting stuck. Now that I think about it, I could just use a cat door. That should handle all my locomotives.

'nudder thing.
Don’t build one on a curve that is tight, either. (big curves ok)
For best results, have enough easement for the loco to straighten out at either end before she enters. Enough room for the longest loco you will prolly own.
