Large Scale Central

Tug Fork, Trinity and Western

HAHAHAH Paul yes SWMBO finlly brought my camera home from her mothers, but right now ON30 World is pretty much pile of junk, styrofoam bits, salvged trck components and some bare stick benchwork…

Hey good find Ric! It helped alot, instead of designing in a dedicated float yard, I’m just gonna add an extra track on the run around siding and use it as a three track yard for switching the barge, then sorting cars and delivering local traffic…should be hours of fun!

Well…its been a while, but Im finally breathing life into this project. The prime motivator was moving The Shop into larger quarters to accomodate multiple projects, the old layout was totally removed, and the benchwork used to support a new 14 foot by 36" bench. A view from the door…

This will be one of the primary work stations…

Looking from the orange chair back at the rest of the room. Its a 14 x 13 space, that I have to share with the furnace but its actually a lot roomier than I originally thought, actully has space to butcher up to a 4x8 sheet with ease. The shelf on the far wall is the staging yard for the Port Lavender Terminal, the sheet on the sawhorses is the base for West Lavender

This is the rough layout of track components for West Lavender. The mainline comes in from staging on the right and leaves bottom left. The two track above the main on the left are the classification tracks with a few industry tracks to the rear. Engine facilities are in the right foreground.

The entire benchwork will be foam secured with Liquid Nails, heres West Lavender with cantilevers in place ready to be hoisted up into position.

The entire benchwork is going to be made of 1" foam, kpinned and secured with liquid nails. I dont expect it to be able to hold a shlefload of books, but should be plenty strong for some narrow gauge trains. Here the cantilevers are in place, and West Lavender ready to hoist into place.

Nice idea Bart , and the work is looking good. I hope that works for you.

Women’s work!

Well, if nothing else, styrofoam is much easier to tear apart than plywood. Let’s see is this version 27.25 or 27.26? Did you see Bob’s posting about the wooden track toy trains? That may be way easier for you to design your latest and greatest, final model railroad. I know, I know you just came up with another idea. How about Legos?

Actually it looks like a great idea and work. I always like your track plans, you should write for the magazines. That way, you could do a new track plan each month.

I was actually quite surprised to see a completed loop of track out in the backyard that you could actually run a train around without having to back up…

And he did mention this when I was out there. Must be something about November. Falling leaves must kick in his Mojo-nator…

Ok the first section of benchwork is raised…and its all done withLiquid Nails…it seems strong enough, there is a bit of flex to it right now, but I think as the sections get locked together and fascia applied it will get stiffer…

If all else fails you can always use those L-shaped metal shelf brackets and anchor them to the wall. A 1x3 on top of the bracket gives it a solid support.

I wanna avoid drilling into concrete walls…hehehehe…

So work continues on the PLT…the bench for West Lavender is now in place.

And I have begun work on my carfloat, two cars wide six cars long. The model is going to be 24" long, starting with a foamboard core which will have cladding applied to look like steel…

The float roughly in place against the warf…

And looking down the quay from the river end…

nice progress, Bart…

Wow! Great work and ideas. I’ll be interested in how and what you use for the steel cladding of the car float.

Due to a bout with the stomach flu this weekend nothing new got accomplished. I did take some photos of the stuff I accomplished last week…

The jetty section brought up to level with the rest of the layout, and lighting installed! I also got the second half of the South Wall benchwork in place…

That last picture takes a minute for my eyes to adjust to the depths and heights. That’s a great use of space! What did you do, create a new work bench to have a clean place to work? Great concept! Are these latest two pictures taken right to left?

Yep 14 feet long worth of new bench with the layout over it…and actually the two photos are on opposite sides of the room. The 14ft secton is on the south wall and the jetty is on the north wall…

Ok Ric was asking for left to right tour…

This is the lefthand section of the. Long work bench, the staging yard will be further to the left along the east wall, but isnt in place yet. Heres a cart i devised that hold my dremel and accessories, mini chop saw, mini tools and power supply, and it all slides up under the bench when Not in use…

Con tinueing to the right, heres the righthand section of the bench, note the AMS boxcar for a scale comparison…

This is the West Lavender section along the West Wall…

This is West Lavender Yard, Papio Creek No 529 is a second hand loco aquired from the Midwest and not yet converted to a coal burner. The brewery will go behind the yard tracks on the left, while the yellow reefer is on the ice plant spur, trying to decide if Im going to put a tt in the right foreground or trackage for another industry…

Idler flats and freight cars await loading the carfloat…

nice tour, Bart… Progress is being made…

Looking good! I’m following this thread with interest.
Steve

Man I really like that. I think a turntable would be a real waste of space and not prototypical for such a small piece of trackage. Unless it was an “armstrong” style and purely used to turn equipment and not store equipment.
