Graeme,

Those are great looking rivets and this is timely for a project.

As I understand, these are called “embellishments”? And you found them in the Greeting Card creations area? Has anyone found these in stores in the USA?

Ric,

You may find them described as “pearls” they were available from a scrapbooking/card making shop that my wife went to here in Australia.

Ric this looks to be what Graeme is referring to. I also located similar at Michaels http://www.joann.com/rhinestone-strip-12/zprd_12523510a.html#start=23

Graeme and Dave,

Thanks to both of you. Now I know what to look for.

Yep that is them just a different name in Australia, the ones I use were a metallic grey in colour.

OK how did you get that to work?

When I tried all I got was “Not Found” message.

About the rivets in the middle they are covering a join where the end caps and a piece of PVC pipe join.

The tubs are 3.5" long.

I have also use PVC pipe and end caps to make tank cars.

All were bought from the plumbing section of my local hardware warehouse.

Another source of plastic rivets is a seller on ebay called “pasidump” who has 4 wheel wooden flat car kits really cheap which make agood base for kit bashing wagons.

Well Graeme,

All i can say is I feel your pain. I had a heck of a time figuring it out. one big thing I did was switch from internet exploring to firefox for my internet browser and things started to work. Specifically what i did was copy your full link (it is cut off in your post) so I copied and pasted the URL into a new browser. Then right clicked and clicked on copy imafge location and then came back to the forum post hit the little picture and pasted the URL in it. Probably an easier way but that what I did. But honestly firefox made a big difference. Also notice your URL is cut off try highlighting the whole thing then copying it. It was suggested to me to use the test forum to work on getting it right. I did and finally it all clicked.

I honeslty think it is set up as some sort of rookie hazing.

Hey they are even on sale for a $1.50. I get some of the strangest looks from cashiers at Michaels. I mean what 40 year old man buys scrapbook supplies, tubes of oil paints in dirt and grime colors, and CA glue. I have even gotten some great HO scale foliage in the fake flower dept. and this time of year the evergreen decor can be trimmed into some very respectable evergreen trees in HO.

I am sure the “strange looks” you get at Michaels is all in your mind. The cashiers there are used to having weirdos in the store!

While building a flat car with 2 Morris minor motorcars (English) I wanted to fit tie down chains.

The biggest hurdle I had was to have them looking they were under tension.

I tried all sorts of methods until I came up with what turned out to be a very simple solution.

I cut my chains in half and then joined then with hat elastic which was hidden under the body work of the cars.

I then used some loops from the hoop and loop method that dress makers use to clip backs of dresses together.

The chains now look as though they are actually holding the cars onto the flat car when actually there is a nut and bolt holding them

I too get some strange looks when shopping at a haberdashery store in town buying bits and pieces.

I dunno…I get “looks” everywhere I go, so I hardly even notice anymore.

Hidden elastic to tension the chains. Now that is a good idea. Now I just need to figure out how to do a quick and dirty scale binder, and my new flatcars can start earning money for the railroad.

Scale chain binders. . . Hmmmm . . . . Squirrel . . . focus Devon

I should have a 1:1 scale binder around here somewhere…, maybe if I find it, I could mail it to Mark and have him print a few 1:24th scale copies for me.

Rooster?

What are you building? What’s in the background? Another Box Cab?

Ric?

Isn’t this the Tricks/Recycling thread?

So? What’s the prototype?

Here’s a scrap pile build I just did. The silo sections are from Malibu tier light lenses that I scrapped to use the bulbs and sockets to light the town. Hardware cloth (wire mesh) for the ladder and railing, and water supply line for the piping.

Nice idea! I know the lights and I’ve always looked at ways to make a silo with the texture. I think you nailed it.
