Trestle template

looks good to me.

but don’t get hasty. good things need their time.

No haste involved at 36C temperature work time is limited, plus wife has just had a breast cancer removed so I am a bit occupied there.

As I go along I am doing the scenery underneath it which basically involves laying a bird wire (used in aviaries) basket under the trestle onto which river stones will be laid. Backdrop still to be decide on.

The wire be sandwiched between the small bottom sills (can be seen laid out roughly in the picture 3) and supports which are underneath and attached to the ladder base.

This is planned to be a focal point on the top line, try imagine a 1:20.3 Shay hauling 2 log cars then a work caboose followed by another log cars and a caboose at the end or a 1:20.3 Connie with boxcars and gondolas in tow, coming down it.

Plus in the background there will be an Australian “bottlebrush tree” growing over the back drop and between the lower track and the trestle a couple of bonsai conifer trees underplanted with ground covers.

All this of course lives in my wild imagination and is subject to change as the mood takes me, I have never finished a railway yet but this one may come close, not to mention the HO version I am building so I can get out of the heat.

So many railways so little time (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-cry.gif)

Edit;

Bit more work done, the first length of wire mesh has been installed and some stones place to see how it will look.

I am sort of happy with it; a bit more tweaking may be in order eg painting the mesh brown so it does not stand out, arranging the stones to give a better look.

A support has been fitted under the bottom sill so the wire mesh is now sandwiched between them, this will evenly distribute the weight of the stones.

Thinking of creating a blog so that instead of posting progress reports on multiple forums I can post a link to the blog post.

seems to me like a bad idea.

not forum friendly.

A link allows you to format your layout progress as you wish, it won’t get lost, and won’t have smart-alec posts on it either.

Many good reasons to put a lengthy topic somewhere “safe” and “friendly”… that’s a reason a friend of mine has posted 80 “how to” articles on my site.

Hiya GAP,

I’m following along and hope you continue posting here…if you’re having trouble with pictures or sizing them, send me a message and I’ll call you, or you can call me, and I’ll walk you through it, including resolution so the bigger pictures aren’t blurry. It’s easier to get it down pat that way.

The reason for the blog is primarily so that I do not have to spend time posting on multiple sites, I post on 3-4 forums and that can get time consuming which is why this is only on 2.

Plus I just do not understand why my pictures on this forum do not work, I posted exactly the same ones on the other one and there is no issue.

To post on here I usually write the text post it then edit the post to add the pictures, if I use the insert image button I get a pop up asking for the source (is it looking for a URL, a desktop location or a disc location?), a description and dimensions.

I have seen the steps for putting the pictures in “freight shed” but that seems long winded when compared to the other forums where it is just;

  • Upload file
  • Select file (usually from my desktop)
  • Insert file as either thumbnail or full image

I do not have to manipulate the image at all, it auto sizes for the site, I did notice that this method only happens on UK based sites and not on US based sites so maybe the software may be different. Looks like I will have to get a “freight shed” spot.

As for calling me I live in Australia and the call costs would be prohibitive but thank you for the offer it is much appreciated.

is it looking for a URL,

yes.

GAP,

Video Embedding

This topic has to be re-mastered every time the site owner makes an upgrade to the software. For this incarnation the procedure is…

  1. Grab the embed code from the YouTube video (directly on the video) right click in OPERA (copy embed code); right click in FireFox (Copy embed code); right click in Chrome (get embed code);right click in IE (get embed code).

  2. In the reply window click on “insert/edit video” button in the top row (looks like a movie frame), and select “Embed”.

  3. Paste the embed code (copied from YouTube) in the box and click “OK”.

That’s what we all found works now. Some day down the road we will have to find a new way for new software, but for now this works. Have fun!

Photo inserting

  1. Start by uploading your photos to a server. You have storage space in the Freight Shed on this web site.
  2. After they are uploaded, click on the file you want to open.
  3. Once it is opened, RIGHT click on the picture and select copy image location. DO NOT use the url in the address bar of your browser.
  4. Next click on the insert photo button in your post and paste the image location in the source line.
  5. Look at the dimensions. You will see them if you click on the first box (height). Make it 800 then click on the second box and it will automatically be correctly scaled.
  6. Then hit OK and your photo will be in your post.

the forums live from building descriptions. if everybody just were to post links, they would not thrive.

when i post something on my website, i never know, how my bragging is received. (yeah, i know about visit counters and guest books…)

when posting on a forum, i can learn from the comments, i get.

so, my way is thus:

  1. load pics to my website

  2. write in one or more forums. (inserting picture links to my website)

  3. when the thread has run its natural course, i save it as .txt to my pc.

  4. then i write a condensed version, using all forums and comments, for my website. (that can take months or even years… )

the result is usually better, than something written direct for my site.

my advantages:

all pics on my own space. less danger, that they get lost.

i get some feedback on my bragging.

the downside:

some forums, like a certain GB-forum, don’t accept pics stored outside their forum.

OK saved pictures to Freight Shed.

Opened first picture, right clicked on it and no “copy image” choice available only “copy or save picture as”

Selected copy and opened insert image and tried to paste the copy.

Nothing happened.

I have no idea what I am doing here I’m using Edge on a Win10 machine.

Pictures are in Freight Shed under “Ringbalin Light Railway”

I was thinking of posting a bit of a story and maybe a picture or 2 then direct people to the blog for more details.

Objective of not clogging up the forum with stuff that could be stored elsewhere.

For example Freight shed has a 50MB limit, I could fill that up in a week if I posted all the pictures of my railway, I just posted 5 pictures and chewed 7+MB.

My pictures are stored in duplicate on 2, 1TB HDDs connected to 2 different machines for redundancy.

Nice work on the subframing (support framing) Gramme

GAP,

You do not have to up load such large photo files to your Freight Shed. This is a reduction to 800x600 at your 180 DPI resolution and is only 133KB. Your file is 1.38MB

This one below is even smaller file size. 800x600 at 72 DPI 66.5 KB

GAP,

It’s not you. It’s Edge. I have a Win 10 machine I use Firefox as the browser. Edge won’t give me the actual URL of the freight shed picture with a right click. I’ll see if I can find a work around.

That’s not a problem Joe I’ll just go to my Linux machine which uses Firefox at give that a go.

This just reinforces why I should ditch Win 10 and possibly Microsoft products completely.

Stand by folks cranky old man on the loose here (https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-surprised.gif)(https://www.largescalecentral.com/externals/tinymce/plugins/emoticons/img/smiley-wink.gif)

Edit;

Just had a thought; seeing as this is just a very small portion of my railway maybe I will start a new thread about it, like I have done on another forum (a HO one as there 2 divisions of the whole railway HO and G).

Then I can just post links to the blog I am building along with a few teaser pictures and some text.

This is using IE.

Let me know if this worked its the third strike.

As for resizing pictures for freight shed, I just copy from the wife’s camera.

To resize I saved them to desktop as per normal then “send to email” and saved them from the email replacing them on desktop. Still a lot of mucking around but it works for me.

First Bent

First bent another view

First bent showing places for the next ones and the tracks roughed in to get a line.

First bent with stones.

First bent with stones close up wire will have to be painted to hide it.

Edit;

I had to redo the pictures because I accidentally deleted the freight shed folder, all back now.

I use a free program called Irfan View, to resize, crop, rotate and edit my pictures.
