Travelin thru the jungle on the AV Cannonball

OK, so I’ve been busy, or maybe just lazy - but either way no trains had actually run on the AV in over a month… Lots of rain, lots of hot, humid days… It was getting to the point the track wasn’t even VISIBLE in places anymore. Creeping Charlie, phlox, petunias, some volunteer distant cousin to morning glory with light blue flowers, roses, even the basil and thyme had simply taken over. The ‘volunteer’ maple seedlings had gone from 3" tall to over 3 FEET!.. After 2 hours of pulling weeds, trying to redirect groundcovers, and just plain cutting stuff back, we managed to find and clean the rails so we could run a sightseeing special…

Remember the basil? This is only about HALF of what we trimmed off of those 3 tiny plants we planted back in May…

We’re going to snip the leaves off and dry them, then seal it in bags and freeze it to cook with. We also have a bunch of Lemon Thyme to dry… The Greek Oregano, OTOH isn’t doing very well… If any of you want a little maple tree or a baggie of fresh basil… just stop by!

I know the feeling. I pulled several wheelbarrows full of weeds Saturday. And I still have half of the GRR left to weed.

Nice pics, Mik!

RR is looking nice with all the plants filling in. We have had hardely any rain this summer but still very hot.

If we were closer we could trade basil for cherry tomatoes!

Or cook up a huge pot of really good spaghetti sauce and split it ;)

That would work!

That’s not weeds, that’s produce!

I have a friend who is getting buried in acorns this year. He has 2 great oak trees, and they’re having a “mast” year.

“In other news, a Mundelein man died in a freak acorning while trying to clean up beneath 2 oak trees.”
