Transforming a flat car

I’ve had a cold all week and haven’t been able to work outside on the layout. So I decided to fix up some of my cheap plastic rolling stock, beginning with the flat car (easiest). It came from a first generation Big Hauler set. Garish, shiny yellow plastic with black accessories – very toylike.

To start, I stripped off the stakes, removed the trucks and some of the accessories, cut off the clunky, oversized stake pockets, and painted the body with reddish brown primer. Then I cut up some strip wood, stained it with thinned latex exterior paint, and then glued the strips onto the body to form a new deck.

Painted and weathered the trucks, replaced the plastic wheels with metal, and reinstalled the trucks.

The transformation is amazing! Although it wouldn’t win any finescale contests, it looks so much more like a real piece of railroad equipment now.

I still need to replace the brake wheel and uncoupling bar. I’m just trying to decide whether to use the original, repainted, or buy something more accurate.

Sorry, no pics yet. I’ll post some as soon as I can.

Sounds good!

NOW… if somebody could just find a way to deal with those herds of Bachmann bobber cabeese!!!

Could always cut a couple down a bit.

I modified the cupola on mine to have more closely resemble an RGS style caboose…

I killed two birds with one stone…a Bachmann flatcar and a Bachmann bobber!

Thats nifty, Richard. I may have to cobble a couple of those together myself. Wonder if the scratch-and-dent at York this weekend will have any parts.

Which reminds me, I need to get my shopping list together.

Thanks Bob! Maybe I’ll win the lottery one day and be able to attend the show at York and meet some of the nice people and their RR’s back east and up in the north country too!

Richard, we could pool our nickels and take a road trip! Invite some of our closest friends. Perhaps, next year!

That Bobber looks mighty nice with them trucks tucked under it, idea time

Thanx, I never did like the looks of the old cupola. Looked more like something on a boat. I also made one similar to Richard’s to use as a battery car for the 2-4-2T loco.
