Large Scale Central

TrainWorld Bachmann sale

Did I already see this here somewhere?
Trainworld is having a sale on their Bachmann stock of large scale railtrucks for $79.99. Not too bad a price but it makes me wonder if they are coming out with a newer version soon? I understand there were driveline gear issues with the early ones.
That is one point, the other is Trainworld website. I have ordered from them before over the phone and usually spoke with a kinda rough Brooklyn woman “Yeah, what do you want” “is that it?” attitude. This time I thought I would order online and as I clicked through the buying process they wanted me to enter my credit card info before I found out how much the item would be to ship and if it was even in stock? I backed out thinking this was a odd process.

Do you guys like the Bachmann railbus?
Todd

Todd, welcom’ ta New Yaak

I like them, if I thought it could work on the Pizza I might bite, but methinks it is way to large for me, great price though

i bought one years ago, I was highest bidder from the Fav Spot…wasn’t supposed to win-that was kinda fun explaining to the wife…

I believe I paid around the same $…I converted to Batt/RCS and it was fun to watch…it did skip along the down grades pretty well.

I sold it to Ralph “Ice” Berg after removing the RC gear.

Dave Goodson devised a “procedure” as it was called…if I remember Bachmann didn’t want to call it a ‘fix’. Once that is complete it should be good to go.

If you have a hankering for one, buy it-for 80 bux it’s a nice addition, there is a recent thread where Ken post a few nice vids showing his and I linked to Georges listing of the ‘procedure’

Edit to add: I’d prolly not buy another right now, I’ve Always had a Hankering for an Aristo Rail-bus…I’ll have one; one day!

I still have it, Cale
Built a coach body for it, but never mounted it.

I’ll do something with it one of these days. Don’t need the coach conversion anymore.
Got a Delton and a Hartland Railbus.
Ralph

I gather that they are also selling off some PIKO stock (1.32) as well.

I’m thinkin’ that Ice just might stick!

Todd- I purchased two of the Rail Trucks thru the sale, shipping & insurance to Boston was a total of @20.60 for both- 'Course they didn’t have to “go over the bridge”

I too have been put off by some of the helps attitude- (But I found certain employes in Malden to be much worse…I used to be a regular at the old store in the late 70s-early eighties, Could take the T and be back to the Financial District within an hour plus…)

My order before that which included a couple of switches, a large truss bridge, as well as assorted smaller items had a shipping charge of $21.06

I don’t feel like they have ever gouged me on shipping or price for that matter… unlike some other places…

Let’s hope not.
I’m holding out hope for something more imaginative
Ice is a street name for Methamphetamine.
An acronym for Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

The ‘driveline issues’ was a simple fix requiring almost complete disassembly of the railtruck. A saddle casting that secures the drive shaft at the forward end was found to be incorrectly fitted. The original issue screws were too long allowing the screws to bottom out before the saddle was tight.

Operation with the original installation would allow the driveshaft to oscillate and wear prematurely. The fix was simple, just replace the original screws with shorter length screws. From memory the screws provided to attach the snowplough were the required length.

As regards the New York toyshop. Well, if you like to deal with them then yoyu no doubt will get the service you are familiar with. For me a mistake on invoicing caused a $186.00 bill to become a $816.00 invoice. I was not aware of the mistake for several weeks as my monthly bank statement had not arrived. The mistake became evident when my card was dishonoured as insufficient funds when I knew that there was plenty of credit available. At the time the exchange rate was $0.59 usd to the $1.00 Aud, so a sum of nearly $1000.00 Aud was involved. To their credit the company corrected the mistake within 24 hours of being advised. Alas, my bank got involved and the ‘dispute’ dragged on for over three months.

Edit: from memory if using track power the roller power pickups on the rear wheels are tempermental and have been known to fail prematurely.

Todd, Bought one for the $79 bucks. Got it in about a week. Have not run it yet, Need check for the too long screws that hold the gears in mesh first.

I’ve never had a problem dealing with Trainworld, but then I live in a community where NYC folk come to spend the summers so I guess I’m used to the mannerisms. The way I see it they are efficient. Tell them what you want to order and have your card ready. Transaction complete in about two minutes. No time to chat - they are busy!

When I was dating my wife, her in Brooklyn, I in Harrisburg Pa, I would visit her on the weekends and make time for a visit to the store. They are even like that in person. Almost like they didn’t want your visit. It was strange, they seemed to have more stuff at ECLSTS than in the small store.

Where are you finding the $79 deal. I go the the website and only find $129

I wouldn’t dare ringing them without the ‘item number’.
The brash voice will haunt me for many years to come… “TrainWorld, ITEM NUMBER”.
Other than that, I had no problems dealing with them and they were in fact friendly and helpful if you were specific when placing an order.

Hi Guys:

TrainWorld has never done me wrong.

Compare that to one Central US dealer who charged me 400.00 to permit a West Coast dealer to sell me an Accucraft engine that was “sold out”. I will never deal with that Central US dealer ever again. I paid the Accucraft dealer commission TWICE simply due to that small Central US dealer’s GREED. I had reminded him as to the amount of product that I had already bought from him to which his reply was that I had not bought that much product from him !

On the other hand, TrainWorld has ALWAYS been nice to me. One female phone clerk refers to me as “Hun” .

I have had long telephone conversations with the TrainWorld owner discussing the train mail order business and both of our other personal hobbies.

One TrainWorld telephone lady informed me that her husband works on the David Letterman Show.

As a Canadian, I remarked as to how I enjoy their New York City accent and their reply is the same.

I do know that the smaller dealers definitely do NOT like Train World as Train World is the KING of sales and Train World passes on their wholesale savings to the end customer, unlike that Central US train dealer of whom I still unwillingly think of almost everyday.

TrainWorld is not always the lowest price.

RLD Hobbies and G Scale Junction are two other excellent and honest dealers.

The TrainWorld business model is to pass on their high volume wholesale savings on to the end customer. That is how the Grandfather built the TrainWorld business from a basement operation to the present day large scale successful business. Honesty and integrity. That is TrainWorld.

The Barbara Streisand New York accent is simply a bonus.

Norman

Heres the e-mail ad that I got a couple of weeks ago, for the SALE.

Thank you

Why would you want to buy this from these honest, if abrupt, New Yorkers when you can spend, oh, let’s say, $284.00 (!) plus shipping with Trainz? (And by the way, I can’t stand people who think it’s cute or memorable to misspell words like that. Reminds me of that obnoxious Toys R Us thing.)

It always gives me pause…to think about what kind of marketing went into…deciding four hundred clams would be a good list price for those things.

Ya know, I’ll probably kick myself come June of next year for not grabbing one of these at this ridiculously low price, much like I missed out on the 45-tonners when Ridge Road Station was blowing them out. But on the other hand, I’ve got two RGS Goose clones sitting on my workshop shelf right now in varying stages of re-construction (one scratchbuilt, one Berlyn), so what the heck am I going to do with a 3rd? I’m hard-pressed enough to justify the two I have on my railroad. I’m still working on a credible history to go with their construction.

On the other hand, there’s always this:

Darn you, Bruce! Now I’m gonna have to ask Santa.

Later,
