Last night I found the 2003 documentary Festival Express on Netflix and watched it as a streaming movie. Nice footage of the rail line from Toronto to Calgary. The tour took place in the summer of 1970. I’m not sure, but this might include the area we visited in Brent, ON with the American Invasion Extended Tour 2006.
As a bonus there is candid footage of the bands on the train that include Grateful Dead, Janis Joplin, The Band, Buddy Guy, Bonnie & Delaney and others. There is also several concert clips from Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary. As a concert the tour was a bust despite the big names. Kids protested the $14 ticket price and caused quite a bit of trouble for the promoter. Geeze, I would have gladly paid $14 at the time just to see the Dead, Janis or Buddy. Today, of the three, only Buddy is still with us (apologies to Phil Lesh, but the Dead is Gone). I’d probably pay 5 times the 1970 price just to see him again.
If you have Netflix, this is well worth the 1:30 spent to watch it on streaming video. You might even want to rent the DVD if you can find it.
