Trains and towboats, I’m a happy camper :slight_smile: While out doing errands decided to go down to dog park along river just down from Hwy bridge and see if anything was happening. Yep, Capital Sand was dredging and had a towboat and barge shuttling loads from dredge to shore facility & then a long grain hopper train came through, 3 locomotives, Union Pacific, Norfolk Southern, Canadian Pacific. I got a 10 minute video which goes; towboat, train, towboat - but with some shake in a few spots because my body ain’t as steady as it was 30 years ago, which raises the question of how come I’m not as young and healthy as I was three decades ago, I don’t understand.

Anyway, sometime tonight I’m intending get the video in YouTube.

Didn’t get any stills of the train. Seemed quite a few of the grain hoppers had had brakes lock up at some point and file the wheels a mite, thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump-thump … you know how it goes.

Note barge entering from at right side. Dredge out of frame further right. Small towboat was shuttling barges of sand between dredge and bank.

If anyone has 10 minutes not otherwise delegated to something productive, here’s the video, unedited; takes a few seconds for train to appear, can be heard first.

Around 5 minute mark my hands get shaky for a bit, too shaky for the zoom I tried, and I make a bit of noise because I’m hurting. Only audio is what environmental and machinery sounds were there.

Camera is a little Canon point and shoot IS-something.

–> A question I have is look how many grain hoppers where the sides are dented from the inside pushing out, what does that?

That was a long train of hoppers. That tug is pretty cool.

I did, in 1978, but it wasn’t in the van since I hadn’t set out to take photos.

Either Roller Derby practices inside or perhaps a wet load froze and expanded.

I’m leaning towards the second…

1 counted 117 hoppers. Probably a couple off, though

Reason#3 for the gouges on the insides of the cars is a cake like meal used in cattle feed gets stuck on the sides and has to be scraped off. I have seen guys have to go into the cars with light duty jackhammers to get it off. After several loads the product starts to mold and smell worse than normal

I’d have not guessed that, don’t know enough about that industry. And, Eeewww, gross.

First I’ll have to find out how or if that can be done. Looked at camera to get its name and is a Canon PowerShot SX720HS.

Instruction book it came with is printed too small to read and I’ve not found a copy online, even on Canon’s own page for the camera,

I think the video looked good and only got shaky when you zoomed in.

That happens to me too with my Nikon when I have my long lens on. If I’m making a video with that camera I will try to find a spot where I can lean on something or rest my arms, camera or even sitting can help to stabilize it a bit more.

It is a pain to carry around a tripod. I do have a monopod and that is a bit better but still.

I have 3 tripods, but there is no hole in my phone…

Just went to Cannon and they couldn’t find my camera!
