Large Scale Central

TrainOps 2013

I should be there by 2 at the latest tomorrow. We came up early to avoid Friday traffic on I-95. Headed over for some birding at the NWR tomorrow morning. But after that, it will be over to Bob’s.

We managed to get over there this afternoon. A lot of work since last time; it all looks great. And even better in person.

I hope you guys have a great time! I won’t be able to make it. I’m home waiting for something to arrive…

Geee shouldn’t there be pictures by now? We shoulda bugged Bob to set up a webcam link…

We will be heading up shortly, weather is beautiful, should be a great day!

Dont forget pictures please…

The Great One.

TrainOps 2013 is in the bucket. Thanks to everyone who helped make it successful, and thanks again to Stan and Deb Ames for opening their layout to us great unwashed from LSC.

As always, there are some issues that need to be addressed on my layout. Some of them are known (engine storage tracks at Franklin Falls, for example), and others cropped up, or became obvious Friday and Saturday. Here, in no particular order, is what I think needs to be done.

Rebuild Pearce. This has been an issue for a couple of years, and attacked twice, but the ground shifts a lot there, that I really need to remove all the track and re-dig the ROW.

West side switch entering Majestic needs rebuilding.

Grade between Majestic and Dead Rooster Gulch needs to be eased a bit.

Extend, if possible, the three yard tracks at Burke. Five cars would NOT QUITE FIT on the tracks, so another six inches on each one would be helpful.

Other than that, a couple other sidings were discussed, and the plans for the 28th Street branchline were outlined.

Again, thanks to everyone that showed up, especially to Vincent for his excellent photographic documentary ability.

Bob,

One that didnt make your list is to correct the track spacing in Franklin falls. we had issues with cars, markerlamps and sunshades hitting cars on adjacent tracks in the middle. I have been using 7-1/2 c/l between tracks on my RR but you can probally get by with 7" as a minimum.

AL P.

Which part of the layout is Franklin falls?
(trying to see if I had pictures of it)

Would the tight spacing that Al is talking about be the (middle to upper) right side of this picture ?

Edit: Added “middle to upper”

This is franklin Falls [http://www.largescalecentral.com/<img%20src=’(http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b107/139vinny/Trains/DSC09266_zps33dff31d.jpg)’>](http://www.largescalecentral.com/<img%20src=’%3E)

you can see the uneven (tight spacing)

Hi, Al.

Guess it depends on the actual width dimension of the boards, as it looks like Bob is trying to keep 1 track/board.

Ties look to be about 4" wide, so the boards look like 6" to me.

That would be tight if you need 7 or 7-1/2" for the larger 1:20.3 scale trains.

Perhaps the cure is to put 1" or 1-1/2" of spacing between the boards, thus widening the whole thing by 5" or 7-1/2".

Don’t know if Bob intended the closest board as a shelf, or barrier to keep knees away from the trains, or as a possible expansion of another rung on the yard ladder.

Hope this helps.

Sincerely,

Joe Satnik

Looks like maybe just moving the last (2) tracks over a little more on the right side of the picture would probably correct the issue.

Yep, forgot about that one, its on the list now. All of the track is going to go toward the front of the layout anyway, since I want to be able to put some flats on the back of it. Re-spacing those tracks should be easy pickins.
