Large Scale Central

Train Shows at the end of 2009

I have finally caught up on email and the Forums on this site. We had the big train show in the St. Louis Area this last weekend. Its been the same for the last, probably 50 years. It was a good one. Attendance was far past crowded with a line out to the street to buy tickets and get in the door. Vendors said the price of tables were high, but they made it back in the first hour. The Gateway Garden Railroad Club had a ball. We set up at Oliver C. Joseph’s, a Chrysler/Jeep Dealer in Belleville, Illinois for the month of December next Saturday. Tis the season.

Pictures to follow.

There were small trains.

Large trains passed as members socialized.

Aaron Loyett showed off his new mill.

And the “Ole Chief” was amused with his “Timesaver Switching Puzzle”.

From the show, what is your impression of the large scale industry per the presence of the manufacturers and any customer responses?

Here, at the summer’s Big Train Show in Ontario, Southern Calif., there were no reports of unusual attendance numbers for the first two of three days – then the crowds noticeably dwindled on Sunday. I spoke to seven attending the booths and reports were so-so as to sales.
The gigantic Del Oro layout was well-viewed by those attending – however, several volunteer workers reported no attendance records as it seemed less than last year.

Wendell,

This was an all scale show. There were only 5 or 6 layouts in the show and a large corner of the dispaly hall was taken up with a ride on train ride for the kids.

I find that Vendors at Train Shows are like Farmers - never happy and always doom and gloom. If you say, “beautiful day”. They say, “Yeah, but its suppose to rain tomorrow”. If you say, “But we need rain”. They answer, “Yeah, but there will probably be a drought, later in the year”. Never happy, never satisfied, never pleased.

I got to the building about 0700 and Jan came with the kids about 1030. She said the lines were long to get in and the building was certainly crowded. I left the club layout very little all day and there was a steady stream of people all day long. On Sunday, the show is always slow until after Church. Yes, people still go to Church in this part of the Country. Now, I will say the show used to be bigger and took up the whole building and now we just take up the main hall, but the main hall has been made bigger. It seems to have created an unmeasurable change to the casual observer.

I don’t think you can expect to break an attendance record every year.
