Train rams bulldozer after apparent prank
COLLINSVILLE, IL --A possible prank led to a train crash early Saturday morning near Glidden Park.

At some point late Friday or early Saturday, someone stole a bulldozer from a construction site on Mill Road, according to Assistant Police Chief Terry Bell. The bulldozer was left on the train tracks at Lebanon Road, near Glidden Park.

At 1:30 a.m., a CSX Railroad locomotive hit the bulldozer.

“It did not derail, but it did serious damage to the train and to the bulldozer,” Bell said.

No one was hurt in the collision. “My understanding is it incapacitated the train for a while,” Bell said.

Bell said police suspect it was a prank. “If they were going to steal it, the fact that they left it right on the tracks makes it suspicious,” he said.

The bulldozer belonged to the city of Collinsville, and had been used on a city project working along Mill Road.

CSX Railroad officials could not be reached for comment.

Police are investigating the incident, and anyone with information can contact the Collinsville Police Department at 344-2131.

Oh, for the “bad old days” when such “pranksters” would “accidentally” get the crap kicked out of them on the way to the jailhouse

Imagine coming around the curve and seeing that on the track.

Now, now, they had a deprav ... deprived childhood and are victims of societal indifference, which has injured their self-esteem.

Our grandsons' paternal grandfather is a train driver. Over Christmas, the little blokes got a ride with him in the cab of an old diesel. Our son-in-law tells us that one of the things the boys were told, several times, was that trains and vehicles don't mix.

Running boom gates at railway crossings, or leaving bulldozers on railway tracks, is selfish. The effect of an accident, or even a near-miss, on a train driver can last a lifetime. Our grandsons’ paternal grandfather has only driven freight trains for decades. Many moons ago, some teenagers were skylarking on a passenger train he was driving. One fell off between the coaches. He works in a rural area and, as it turned out, he knew the boy’s family. He requested assignment to freight trains only, and the request was approved.

These jokers did not just mess with a bulldozer and a train. They messed with a human heart.
