Amtrak has been using these since the early 80’s. Replace all of the track on the NEC. There are some videos on youtube. Look under Amtrak TLM.
Well, it isn’t exactly laying its own track. More like replacing ties and on the fly. But it’s still cool

Why can’t they make something like this for resurfacing streets?
They actually do. I have seen it working on our major highways for years. Grinds and picks up the old asphalt, heats it and then mix in some new asphalt, and relays this ‘new’ mixture.
