Train cart trailer finished

We finely finished this rolling stock trailer cart that goes behind the main storage cart. I had a retractable tong so to save storage space in the garage when hooked together.

Being an old truck driver we had to install some Mud flaps and end plate with rubber dock bumper for the guest that flowing to close behind the carts. Lol Now don’t thro mud up on them and have chin guards… lol
Ok. It was a fun project to build and has a lot of extra storage. Between the two cart they pull very easy at around 400 lbs total wt.

Here are finished photos.
Frt. shed. Not working on photos uploaded? Have to find another link to work photos.

I see I missed one black strip on the lift side… lol. I think I will leave that way and see how many guest fine it.

It a lot larger that it looks. We had to widen the axles and has 1 inch metal frame.
Maybe I should get some Yosemite Sam decals to put on the mud flaps… “Privet joke to Richard Smith.”

The two carts together…

Cool!

Holy cart!
That looks great.
About how heavy are one of the draws with the trains on them?
I am guessing this is a two person operation to remove the draws?

Noel,

It still needs a motor and a horn!

Hey Joe… I have a motor & gear box that I was going to use off a kid cart, but really don’t need it. I can pull it with no help and no problems other than backing them up into the garage. Kind of like a truck and trailer to back up. Probably could have a back up beeper on it so not to run over any kats.
If I was going to load the cart up on the pick up going up the rams, Ya that might help. But then need brakes to get down then…lol.
May need a horn so the people know when I’m going to stop or back up…lol

Vincent. Not that bad… We use Paraffin wax for the runners groves. They slide out easy, but have to watch out how far you pull them out.
The trailer is not to bad to pull the draw out, but the main cart you need two people due to the wt.
We normally just put the draws out about three rows of cars and then go to the other side to get the rest out from that side.

Tk’s David.

That will not hold up being towed by my 2500hd, lol

Great solution to moving rolling stock to/from the RR. Lots of ideas. Have you considered full-extension drawer slides for the individual shelves. The heavy duty slides can easily support several locos while fully extended.

MarK…Probably wouldn’t fine any trains in the cart either… hahaha

Hi Bill… One reason is the cart would probably tip over… We had to widen the axles to almost next to the sides of the cart.
Each shelf with just rolling stock is around 40 to 5o lbs hinging out over center of gravity. We would have to install out riggers on the carts… hahha.

The original cart from Harbor frt. It had only about 24 inch axles and when I built the first box , I almost lot the hole box load when I had two shelf pulled out. Just to much wt. in these carts.

Using pneumatics tires they do give a little for easyer ride, but also we don’t want the shelf to start rolling out of the guides. so we are using 2x4’s grooved out to be part of the shelf and sides of the cart as one. The wax makes it easy to pull shelf out and don’t lose the shelf’s if cart is leaning a little.

Has the Highway Patrol approved the extra length? I didn’t see any “Oversized Load” signs either. Could result in a substantial fine if you’re stopped at the scales.

P.S. Really nice rig Noel.
