Trackside Details scale

I have a question about certain Trackside Details and their scale.

TD-66 is a straight “shotgun style” smokestack. I need to replace my diamond stack on my Bachmann Shay to better resemble a prototype that I’m modeling. I’ve noticed that some details do not look to be 1:20 scale. Anyone know if this stack is?

I don’t know about the stack, but I’ve used their headlight bracket and on the package, it’s marked "G Scale (1:20.3 & 1:22.5)
And this was bought quite a while ago, so I don’t know if they still mark them that way or not.

Jake, Haven’t used the TD-66 but have used the TD- 164 Tapered with flared bottom , on one of my Shay’s. Here is a picture.

Excellent, I’ll probably order one then. I bought some detail parts for another loco. I could have sworn it was TD and when I got them, they were nowhere near 1:20 scale. Looked more like 1:29 or even 1:32 and yes they were marked “1:20.3 or 1:22.5” This is the inspiration for my build:

I’m also steering toward maybe this one, which would make the TD-164 a better option.

I might just get both. It isnt much and I can alwasy find a use sometime for the other one.

My take on it is that there is a prototype for everything. Who is to say that the stack is not right? The shops always use what they have on hand. What they had on hand was a few inches shorter than the last one they out-shopped. You are not going to notice it from a galloping horse anyway.

Thats the way I see it, I wanted an oil load for my shay and researched Shay’s on the net and everyone is different, so I hacked one out some old parts, Tell me it’s not prototypical. I may have to do one for my Heisler if I can’t find one.

Both of my Bachmann 2-8-0’s had the coal load replaced with back-shopped
oil tanks and both are different. The guys used what they had on hand.
