Large Scale Central

Track realignment at Burke (and beyond)

Bob that wall is over 4 foot (scale) and needs to be engineered. Like Steve, what is holding it up besides the Big rock? Paul

Is there the same on the other side and are they tied together?

Nope, just cemented all together in a big lump

More track down, this time at Majestic. First we have the switchback track to the #2 mine, and company store. Here’s the view looking back toward the Majestic Colliery, with the #2 mine on the left.

and back the other way. The company store will be at the end of the tail.

Next is the track at the colliery itself. Here’s two views

I have a few more ties to spike in place, and the throw to install, but the track here is done.

Bob, it’s coming along well…

Very interesting

Switching Majestic should be “interesting”

Oooh! That’ll be fun to operate on. One of the things I like especially about east coast oriented railroads is the coal industry and the interesting structures associated with it. Really going to be an interesting operation!

Looks like some great progress. I like your idea of the company store. This one still exists in West Virginia - it would make for a neat model.

Neat store. I wonder if I could make the back flat and have a loading dock? Hmm…

Anything is possible since I don't have any pictures of the rest of the building...:D

Just do what I did…I switched this from an Ice House to a General Store…

Great, I’ll switch it to a company store. Send it on over.

Minus the weather vane

It's in the mail...............;)

That sounded like, “The check’s in the mail!”

Bruce,

Where is this store in West Virgina? What railroad? What is inside it now? Interesting building design.

Ric, That is the Whipple Company Store, located in Scarbro, WV. It’s not too far from Fayetteville, where the New River Gorge bridge is located. It can easily be reached from I-64 at Beckley. http://www.whipplecompanystore.com/ I am not sure which RR served it, but I do remember them talking about the train coming by. Inside is a mix of old and new, with a lot of exhibits from the original store.

An older picture of a similar store in Glen Jean:

I found the whole tour quite fascinating. They talked about the place being a fortress, with rifle ports at the very top…to control the town.

That part of the state was C&O country…they had the largest fleet of 4truck Shays t work on the mining branchs in the New River Gorge. The NG MAnns Creek Railroad was also in the Gorge near Fayetteville, right in the middle of what is now Babcock State Park (named after the Babcock Coal & Lumber Co that donated the land) Not to mention the town of Thurmond same neck of the woods…Lots to look at…
