Tool Choices?

In the latest issue of NG&SL Gazette, one of the letters mentions a few tools and I was wondering if anyone here had tried any of these: The first one looks interesting, especially for cutting curves:

“The knife loops slides easily over your index finger for a more controlled cutting experience.” The second MIGHT be OK, but…

“What could be easier? Instead of having a blade that drags or skips on other surfaces, this smooth surface allows a cutting blade to just glide along in the cutting process. The large cutting surface of smooth glass features printed photo grid lines for alignment and rubber gripper feet for safety.” It comes in two sizes: 9" x 12" and 13" x 13". While I was poking around the web, I also ran into some other possibilities: A rotary cutter. I was thinking this could be good for cutting styrene, even though it’s made for paper…

“Now sleeker and sharper than any tool out there: your fabric won’t slip, you get smoother cuts, and you get ultra-close to your ruler. This new ergonomic rotary tool has benefits the competition can’t touch. Our blade “trigger” has a new natural shape: More of the grip is within reach of your strongest fingers. You can engage and release the blade without added stress or a second thought. Overall use is simply safer: The trigger design works naturally with your hand; when you let go the blade retracts, reducing the chance of injury. Plain and simple. Improved line of site to the blade: We eliminated the blade guard and trimmed down the body of the handle around the blade so you can see what you’re cutting- without straining or body contortions - for the most accurate cut. Easiest blade change around. With only one-step, two parts, and no washer to misplace, this new blade changing system is a simple quick switch reducing mistakes and saving you time.” Another tool for the scrapbook crowd, but I thought this could be used for cutting curves in styrene:

The cutting tool can be used with Curvy Cutter™ Template Sets. Features and Benefits: - For photos and paper - For exclusive use with Curvy Cutter™ System - Two-sided blade cuts in both directions - Ergonomic handle swivels for one step cutting - Comfort grip handle - Cuts clean edges from start to finish - metal track wheel holds cutting tool in track for smooth cuts And some of the templates:

Curvy Cutter™ Cutting Tool sold separately. For best results use a glass mat for smooth cuts, self-healing mat may provide uneven results. When cutting multiple sizes from one piece of paper, cut smallest shape first and continue progressively cutting larger sizes. Why would we want to make this any easier? Model trains is supposed to be serious stuff! :stuck_out_tongue:

My wife has most of those for her scrapbooking stuff. Alas I’m not allowed to touch them. I think it has something to do with the last cutter I destroyed
Terry

I don’t think you were supposed to cut stainless rail with it

A word of warning, The rotary cutter will cut you quicker then you can blink an eye. That baby is really sharp. just accidentally coming in contact with it will draw blood.
I have used it on plastic cardboard, thin wood, and foam.

I’m not as accident prone as this may sound but.

To use it you unlock the blade an it pops out. first time i didn’t expect it to do that and nick a finger holding the material. So open it away from anything you don’t want cut.
Always close the bladed when finished with the cut. Lay it down open and bump it draws blood.

You have to be careful when cutting any material with it as it will travel from the line of cut easily if tilted from side to side. You have to cut at 90’ angel.

The cutting board is similar to the dress makes cutting board my wife gave me the small one she had and it is nice to when cutting through any material .
They are called self healing boards. A soon as you cut the surface close the cut you left in it.

Fiskars has the extra blades for the cutter also. The cutter and extra blades can be found in most Michail’s and Joan Fabric shops.
