Todd's official Mik's Build Challenge 2014

The Door has arrived! Thank you Dave. While it was being pulled into the yard somewhere was heard the theme song to “2001 a Space Odyssey” .

Pictured are a few of the guys that are expected to design and build something amazing from this humble beginning if they can stop staring at it long enough that is. They have a strange urge to go to Jupiter?

…or a space oddity. I love that pic, Todd. Hilarious! I know you’ll come up with something pretty awesome. Good luck, buddy!

Dave… Dave… Don’t do it! Dave

“Open the pod bay doors HAL…” LOL

Thanks for the words of encouragement John, The Pressure is ON. It was my idea for the door and now I’m kinda stumped. The guys are still outside staring at the door. They are talking about dragging the door around the main line stopping here and there and placing the door where a building might be able to grow around it to see if inspiration will strike them.

I haven’t seen your build log John will you be joining in the fun or be retiring as THE CHAMP?

Whatever my guys come up with I trust them that “it will be Wonderful”

After staring at that door and thinking about what the RR needs more I have settled on building a 2 bay engine house. The ultimate design is still up in the air whether it will have a peaked roof or a flat slopped roof with possible windows front and back like a traditional engine house. This will go on the edge of my raised bench that holds my main rail yard.
It is still in the planning stages.

If I may correct you, do not say “in the planning stage”. The newest correct term is:

“It’s on the napkin.”

sloped roof. but, I don’t think the loco will fit through the provided door.

Terry

I think you are correct Terry, It all looked good on the napkin! but Not so good in the real world…

I didn’t get much done yesterday but did manage to get a few lines drawn onto a piece of masonite.

Here the inspectors are back for a look. The roof line is a hot topic.

Still undecided as to the configuration of the roof but otherwise I was able to make a pile of sawdust today.

Today’s sawdust is tomorrow’s nappy

They say, “If you want to make the gods laugh, tell them your plans.”

I had an ice house and platform all planned out for this, Todd, and my workbench and I are hungry to get into the challenge but I got blindsided by post ice-storm issues. New repairs are still needed even a month after it happened. I got heavy tree limbs falling off my neighbor’s honking enormous detestible tree that I hate, one smashing through my shed roof and another one flattening one of my garden benches while a third one ripped down my 'phone and cable lines all over again.

I’d already spent a thousand $ last year trimming a HUGE branch of that tree that literally covered my entire yard, as my dear neighbor has never been willing to do anything about it, even if I shared the cost, and a couple weeks ago I spent over $200 on a guy to clean up what had already fallen and littered the place. I confess all this made me just a little bit grumpy. My heart’s in the right place, though.

I know I’ll be laughing about it at some future point, but not just now…

With all this stuff going on, I just can’t settle in and work on a model properly. I do have my door, though, but for now I’m sitting on the sidelines with the cheerleaders. I’m cheering for everyone 'coz you’re all winners in my book!

And so are Mik and Dave, for organizing this, God love 'em!

I see John, so you are planning on jumping in near the end and wowing all of us with another nice build? Actually sorry for all the problems there. What a pain.

A bit of progress was made yesterday and since we are snowed in today I will be down in my shop tinkering away. Photos to follow.

That totally sucks…what can be worse than a bad neighbor?

You have been so patient with a pretty tough neighbor. What a wonderful example of gentlemanly restraint!!! God bless you.

Doc Tom

You made more progress then me. How much snow did you get out on the cape?

I’m sorry, Dave. I can’t do that.

We got 8-10" Shawn. Nice and fluffy but a bit deep to try and plow it. Since we were snowed in I got to work on the build.
Monday I had cut the walls out of masonite. I then used my dado blade on my table saw to cut the 3/8th inch clapboard. A time consuming but worthy chore. I then cut out the windows and doors. Tuesday morning in anticipation of the storm I ripped some bits of cedar 1/2x1/2 inch and today it all came together.

After the bracing was glued and nailed, the pin nailer sure is a time saver the 4 walls were slammed together.

Next step are the windows. I don’t know why I decided to torture myself with building 10 of them but I know when finished it will be good. I’m thinking a piece of plexi then hardware clothe for the mullions. On the roof I might do 4 skylights.

It is coming along.

Watching with interest and admiration. I like the building design you settled on.
Isn’t a pin nailer one heck of a useful tool? Just last year Dave T persuaded me to get one and it’s GREAT!!! Makes so many jobs a pure pleasure. Looking forward to those windows…

I love my pin nailer.
Today I got 2 coats of yellow on the outside and one coat of grey inside. Years ago a client who was moving had a bunch of paint in quarts and I grabbed the ones that would be good RR colours. This building will be yellow with brown trim kinda like the engine house in NH at the Conway Scenic RR.

My plans for the 10 windows is to use hardware clothe for the grids and a small piece of plastic which is cut from a 8’ piece of edge guard used in panelling available at HD for $1.50 per piece. I have used these to make doors and windows in the past. In this build I will paint the grids and white pieces brown. I am still thinking about the design for these windows but here is what I have so far.

No work tomorrow I will be at the BIG E maybe I will see some of you guys there.

That is a very nice window. Impressive.
