Todd's Build Challenge Log 2015

After much deliberation, planning, scheming, dreaming, engineering, napping and working my way through several cups of coffee, a donut or 2 and a stack of napkins I am finally ready to proceed and introduce my proposal for Miks Build Challenge 2015.

You know, it’s for kids…

I know you are all saying “why didn’t I think of that!”

Good Luck Gentlemen

WOW… Todd… Was the donut so good that you had to have another, or just so so and had to try some other for better inspiration?

You still have until the 14th for minor revisions to the revised revision. Sounds like more donuts to me. Oh darn!

Seems so Obvious.

Must be so obvious…I’m missing it. (maybe I need to drink more of something that gets mixed in with coffee).

Well Mr Haskins, with a well presented detailed proposal like that, I’m sure the Government will be happy to fund your proposal.

Will $570 million be enough???

:stuck_out_tongue:

THANKS $570 million would do nicely but the build challenge has a limit of $30. LOL

I will let you guys in on a little secret… my idea is more or less a box on wheels…

Stay tuned

A special delivery was made yesterday all the way from New Mexico, Thanks Dave.

I might have to alter my napkin plans just a wee bit.

Oh wait that was last years starting point… HA!

Is it too late to change my plans?

I really like my original idea but feel it might not be the best idea as far as the whimsical requirement catagory goes.

Probably cost you the $570

Todd,

Since I don’t think anyone really knew what you were doing anyways I thin your alright to change.

Todd, Let me remind you of the official rules, as posted in the opening post to this years Build Challenge.

Under the “Restrictions” Section. ( please read and adhere to strictly), Or murphy will attack all you’re rolling stock, and cars too.

Paragraph 5: Sentence 3: "You can change it if you want to but you must post it. And as it’s still several days short of the official starting gun, You can do anything you want to, ( I do like how you psyched out all the other guys with you detailed rendering of the complete instructions to the winning build.) That was cleaver of you. Fooled Boomer for sure.

I originally had an idea to do a racer that could challenge the caboose drag racer that I recently posted a video of then I remembered this really cool idea that has languished in the back of my mind for years. The napkin plan is a good one and according to a train buddy in the know it should be built and presented to Charlie Ro or Aristo as a proposed commercially viable product.

Anyways I believe the racer idea will better adhere to the Whimsical theme of this years challenge and make better use of the flat car kit.

Thanks Dave. The napkin plan will follow shortly.

Sounds like fun. I really enjoyed the caboose drag racer. It really hauled **s.

Doc Tom

Thanks Tom.

I don’t want to keep you guys in suspense any longer so without further delay, direct from the desk of the dirty napkins comes the latest sketch, a low slung racer with large wheels a central boiler and a rear wing. I’m not sure how it will be powered, maybe by a big rubber band or I’ll find a cheapo RC car willing to give its guts for greater glory. Either way the plan is to keep it low so it has more chance of staying on the tracks in the curves. Ultimately if it works out I would like to build 2 so I can have races like slot cars. Maybe the boiler will be offset like a shay to give the brave pilot more room in the cockpit. There are lots of maybes with this one but I like the direction I’m heading in.

GENTLEMEN START YOUR ENGINES !!

Maybe I should change my design also, so when the family and I are in Brewster (again) this summer for vacation, we can race. Winner buys the tall cool ones!

Sounds good Matt go crazy.

I haven’t seen too many new postings of progress so you guys must be having the same trouble as me.
I have a pile of parts and pieces and a vision but the getting it all to come together is the tough part.

I expect to be struck by inspiration as well as direction this weekend.

Get tinkering lads.

Thanks Boomer.
Making the transition from napkin to a real tangible thing can be a painful process of sleepless nights and brain wracking days but finally progress has been made!

As many of you know a few months back there was a strange occurence on the ol Rock Root and Pup Poop RR involving this drag racing caboose.

Everyoone was very excited to see what the boys in the shop had been working on and when those doors were finally cracked and the folks saw what emerged they were amazed.
The caboose racer was tested within the yard confines and after a few shake down high speed passes it was brought out to a good long straight away on the RR to see what it could do. The speed tests broke all kinds of records and garnered notice from near and far some of which was not good. Once the crowds were brought back home and the “racer” as it had come to be called was back in the engine bay rumours of men in black were heard to be skulking about.

One early morning the Racer was taken by what some thought to be a covert government organization. There were few witnesses but one brave individual followed them back to the test track area where the Racer was seen to go even faster and in its final pass it disappeared leaving only the glowing red hot smoking tracks. This brave individual has since gone into hiding and I don’t blame him but he left us the video he made that day.

Today the people of the RRPPRR have been bitten by the racing bug and their need for speed has caught their imaginations so the shop crew has been tasked to build a new one that they hope will go even faster than their beloved Racer.

A flat car kit was delivered, the spare parts bins dumped out and the saws fired up. Here is a secret photo of the RR boss and foreman checking the build progress. It is different but they like it.

Nice. I like the boiler. Looks like we will need to have a whimsical race with all the speed themed builds.

Tom

Update:

There has been some super secret testing of a certain component of this build that will be released to the public at the conclusion of this build challenge.

What will hopefully be produced in the form of a finished racer by the end of the construction time frame will stand on its own for voting.

This one extra add on will simply be highlighted for the cool/ridiculous factor.

It is that top secret.

Let the building continue…
