Large Scale Central

Today I popped the cherry!

Yuh know, at 61 yrs old, you don’t get a chance to do something for the first time…
I grabbed a red and green box and stomped the hell out of it and threw it in the trash!
It felt good.
All these years of falling over it, kicking it out of the way, storing it, moving it from place to place…
It’s over!!!
It’s gone from my life!!
Now I’m gonna stomp the hell out of about 150 more boxes, mostly red/green, some yellow, some blue.
And toss 'em out of my life.
Collectible–schmectible–.

less clutter = happiness!

hope you havent stomped all of them, they show up on ebay for $10 plus at times somebody always looking for a box cause their item came without, like me i’m looking for the top styrofoam sleeve inner white box over the top of an LGB dsp&p loco right now??

I’m with jerry. what boxes do you have. ?
I’m not a collector but it makes it easy for me to store them for the winter if I can box my stuff.

I’m interested also! But even if you want to blow all of us off, at least re-cycle rather than trash. Jack

They make great fire starters for the shop stove…There has been more damage done to equipment, replacing it in the boxes than any other way. I used to burn the styrofom at one time, but it gives off an ugly black smoke that the neighbours just can’t seem to appreciate…!!!

I used to store them in their boxes when I wasn’t playing with them.
Opening ends, sliding the inside cardboard out, disengaging the wheels from the slots, reaching inside to get the brake wheel, etc. Finally I cut the flaps off of the inside cardboard.
Once in a while you would catch something on the window and tear that out.
They are well worn on tops and bottoms from sliding them in and out of the stacks of boxes.
I finally had it!
Up went storage shelves, so now I can see all my trains. Much easier to pick and choose which I want to run. All the pieces stay on.
Much better now!

Hey, this is post 1000!
Whud I win, Bob!

A word of caution! Make sure box is empty before you stomp on it!

Chuckle! Doesn't your stomach go all hollow when you hear that crunchy sound?!!

How in the heck would I ship empty boxes? Flat or assembled? Then I have to find more boxes just to put the boxes in. Stomping just seemed easier.
And what if it is shelf worn and scratched for you box collectors?
Don’t have any Loco boxes, except Aristo and USA.
Keeping the LGB loco boxes, in case I need to move out of my house for some reason.
Rolling stock boxes are LGB, Delton, Aristo Classic, USA, Bachmann, etc.

For you two that want the LGB parts (Mark never sent his address to me), I am slowly working on getting the weights out and sorting it. The weather turned good, so I spend a little time outside, a little time installing bat/rc, and I’ve been sick for over a week with a stomach problem, so please bear with me. You’ll get your parts.

WOW JB, that is bloody revolutionary!

You know how I’m absolutely smitten with EPL/LGB, therefore … I’m still storing the boxes.

Hans,
You need counseling!

JB you are giving me ideas! I had to install a shelf in the shop room just store some of the c______ maybe I shall do boxs too, all but one though it still has an LGB 0-4-0 with the powered tender! Had it for ever, still in European colors and can’t seem to want to paint it or convert it! That is two track powered loco’s on the RR! but NO track power outside, toooo much work and I’m old and lazy! And yes it is another nice spring day here in the PNW a nice break from all the @#**#$@ Rain! Just finish one Honey Do project and now she has another but you all know how that goes!

Paul

HJ,
I think all those boxes (grey, yellow, red, cherry red and later red boxes marked ‘Made in Western Germany’ or just maybe, ‘Made in USA’) may become more collectable than their contents. Certainly more so than ‘Made in China’, or Czech Republic or Hungary.

Sometime ago, rather than simply junk a LGB starter set box (I could not face destroying it), I actually listed it on eBay hoping that someone would take pity. Alas, several dollars out of pocket and no takers, I was left with the squeamish task of making the box small enough to fit in the garbage bin. I was so ashamed of myself for having done so, but it was a dirty job and someone had to do it. To date, I have not as yet had the courage to repeat my act of wanton destruction on another 'collectable' box. Plenty of Bachmann boxes have littered the garbage bin, so I am not simply a hoarder.

Paul,
My honey do was to get back started on my layout. Today was the first nice day in months, so I re-shot the grade and moved one long bridge, ready to put in place.

Tim,
It will be 60-80 years until those red/green “made in Germany” boxes have any value.
Similar to an old 1920 train set box.
Not until then.
I’ll be long gone…

Yeah, I gave most of them to my grandson. I told they they were more valuable than rookie baseball cards.

Are you volunteering?

Sure, Hans.
We could meet down here at the Hooters near me and discuss this mental Red Box Syndrome.
After we are there, “What was it we were going to discuss?”

Fr Fred, You should see what happens to Styrofoam when it is hit with molten metal! One of my few careers I had was working in administration for a foundry. Once in a while, I would wander out in the shop. The artists send their pattern to the foundry, such as a logo, statue, or seal. The pattern is carved out of styro. The molder tamps the styro pattern in the flasks, leaving a huge gas relief hole in the center. Four pourers simultaneously pour hot molten aluminum, bronze or brass as fast as they can into the mold. A jet blast of blue fire hits the ceiling as the styro burns inside the mold. Pretty spectacular! Needless to say, it's a "one shot pour", similar to lost wax. If you screw up, you'll need a new pattern, and the artists doesn't like re-carving. j

Yep, A place like that could lead to a bit of memory loss.  Last thing on my mind would be Red Boxes, figuratively speaking. :P :/
