Large Scale Central

Today hit 0C

so I might just celebrate by running a Shay or two before it gets dark at around 3.30 or so. And for those who may have less than charitable views on the varying quality of AccuCraft’s products over the years, and I’ll admit that I’m one of them, this will be the 125th run of my 3-cylinder Shay.

I’ll let you know what happens…might even put something on YT, too.

Best to all

Terry,

Do you keep a log of what and when it runs?

Yup.

It’s not like I’m running a fleet, y’know. With only seven steamies it sure as hell ain’t rocket science. I keep a little book in their boxes and fill it out when they run - when, where how long and so on.

Just ran the 3-C Shay - got 41 minutes as it was marginal for butane. The wind didn’t help.

Nor did the weather. [tee hee]

Terry, just saw that across the page on a different post?

cale

You guys caught me in the middle of an update.

Ahah!! I thought it might be the ‘travellers’ at their annual telephone line thieving again…I can put my crossbow away now, darn it.

This 3 cylinder Shay will run 2 hour’s plus on one fuel load.

My Shay has the David Bailey x2 fuel tank fitted, nothing special. Here in yUK the Shay by itself is a pretty expensive item - mine was well over Can$3500 six years ago. The thought of trying to get ahold of all the bits to make that remarkable model out of AccuCraft over in CA, just gives me the shudders. Guess you guys have it lucky with bits. Thankfully, the only bits I’ve needed from cliff were pretty small - I’ve never tried to get trucks and drivelines from him and there are absolutely NO spares here in yUK for US outline models.

BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

Just got in from running ‘Earl’ in -8C. It went like a mad thing, due, I’m sure, to the fuel mix I gave it. Nooooooooooooo, NOT nitrous, but the usual 75% butane propane stuff topped up with pure butane. Lit up a treat and came up hot very fast. Got a 43 minute run, too, with lots of a great stoom pleams!!

The little 0-6-0 from the Welshpool & Llanfair Railway has always been a certain runner, no matter the weather and gives a great chuff even without the benefit of a chuff pipe.

I urge you all with steam trains to get out there and run the darn things in the cold - you can really SEE all the fun you’re having!

PS- parts of the UK are expecting -20C this evening - many places are already hitting -18C.

Tac, Need some Pics. Cool, damp days do give some nice plumes…
