To build grade crossing on section of Bachmann track?

Hey Y’all; Want to build a grade crossing on a section of Bachmann track. Three conditions: 1.) Has to remain suitable for “carpet running” 2.) Available materials are balsa, basswood, mat board. 3.) Want it to look “steam era” Thoughts? Ideas? Suggestions?

(painted the ties and rails with Rust-oleum brush on rusty metal primer)

forrest;
I did see one time a crossing made up of square logs laid lengthwise leading up to the tracks about 4 foot on each side and planks laid between the rails with a notch for the wheel flange on each rail. I have no pics of it though. You could probibly do that with balsa.

Hey David. Ahh. and had forgotten I’d posted this subject here, have some progress photos to show :slight_smile:

Forrest;
Yep you hit it really close.
The wood was a little more grayish. But the newer they were the more color they would have had. Great JOB!
David

Aw, thanks Dave :slight_smile:

Progress. Added planks to center of crossing. Are about one hair below flush with railhead. Building up dirt is next. Then sign. Funny how dramatically the differing light sources change apparent colors - looks like 3 different colors of carpet and it’s in the same place. Oh, Dave, the wood is now a little bit more faded and greyish :smiley: courtesy a wash of Apple Barrel color Pewter Grey.

Forrest;
That’s it you hit the color to.
That is a great job.
That looks really good.
Are you going to market them?

Thanks David :slight_smile:

Nope, not going to market them; my health makes just getting things done for myself a bit of an iffy proposition.
