Mike had a nifty idea - how about a place for tips? Now, I do believe he was considering a separate forum, but what if we renamed the Tools forum to Tools and Tips? Besides the neat aliteration, maybe it would liven up that tool forum!
With a mere motion of my hands…
Sheesh…can’t complain about any delay here!
Well done !!
Now , if you could just make the FIGURES thread easier to see–I was talking to someone about it , saying I’d never noticed it there , and they couldn’t find it .
Now , given that there is actually a post in there saying the same , don’t you find that odd ?

Well… while you’re at it Bob… how about a BUILDINGS forum? Please?
My $0.019…
While its nice to have all of these sub-forums, it can soon evolve to a point where it’s just too difficult to navigate. The current forum software is light years easier for most of us than the previous version, but as traffic grows it becomes more and more difficult to keep up. I suppose at some point you need to step back and say you can’t read every post. With the current software the only way I can see to not miss something I might want to see, is to open every post in oder to clear the new flag. The Snitz software a lot of us are used to has the Active Topics view, which allows you to pick and choose from the new posts since your last visit, and it’s updated each time you visit regardless of read status.
I guess what would help would be a Go To Last Post option when opening a post. That way clearing the new flag wouldn’t require scrolling an entire thread to see what was new; you can scroll back from the end to find the new posts.
The Mark All Topics Read function is meant to take care of the problem of reseting the New flag without reading every post. The problem is, we post too much! With the forum database as big as it is, it takes a very long time for that function to process every post in an active topic.
It’s very nice to see all the activity here. I caution that we try to not grow too fast least we catch up to the problems that prompted most of us to seek out this place.
Thank you Bob for providing us a home.

Hmm…how about a “mark this thread as read” link somewhere on the message thread list, maybe clicking on the “new” icon will mark the thread read?
How does the “Active Topics” view work? Is it a sub-list, across forums, of active threads?

Hi Bob -
I wasn’t wanting to add to your TO DO list, but since you ask…
Clicking on the New icon to mark just that thread as read would be very cool.
Active topics is a database view of all topics, with active threads being listed below each one. You can set the date range of active topics to view. One being “Since Last Visit” which uses a cookie (I think). Your “New” flag actually works better for those who access from multiple computers since it’s not dependent on the client PC to track the date/time of last access. I digress… Active Topics have multiple view options such as Last 30 Minutes, Last Hour, Last 2 Hours, Last Day, Last Week etc. I used the Since Last Visit most often.
Again - I’m not asking for a change, but your idea about the New icon, if easy to implement, would make keeping up easier. It might also give a more true picture of the thread read count if users only opened threads the actually want to read. There are 4 or 5 threads I open and scroll every day just to reset the flag and I’m artificially bumping the read count up.
Thanks!
JR
good idea get more tips would be great
