Tionesta Valley Railway research

Good morning,

I came across an RMC article about Eastern US narrow gauge railroads, and one in particular kind of caught my eye; the Sheffield & Tionesta Railway in Pennsylvania.

I was wondering if anyone has a few minutes, if you might know if you have any information or books or magazine articles that discuss this little railroad, if you could send me the name of the book or magazine so I could find a copy please?

I’ve been searching for a little narrow gauge line to use as a prototype (loosely) for my outdoor railroad, and honestly want to do something other than the Colorado lines, mainly because I don’t have the landscape for anything near Colorado…lol.

Just thought I’d ask here and see if anyone might have something I could look through or help in my research.

thanks,
michael

Here is a place to start. Though there is not much on the site, you might be able to contact them for more information.

Good luck. Keep us posted, so to speak.

Thanks Steve, I’ll check it out.

Another is the narrow gauge book: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0804717311/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00

It has hundreds of narrow gauges all around the country. I’ve already grabbed many of the ones from PA as part of a NG system I am building to compete against the PRR at the turn of the century. But I can share!

I don’t know any of the history, but I have photos of one of their cabooses being restore in Kent, CT.

I just looked thru the book Jason recommended and there is only 2 1/2 pages with 3 pics on this particular rr.
One pic is a Heisler, one a rod engine of some type, (A Bachmann Annie would work great) and the third is the engine facilities.
I’ll see if I can get a good scan of the pics.
The next RR covered on the next page is the Tuscarora Valley RR. Sound familiar? Our own Kevin Strong’s RR.

They all seem to have been purchased second or third hand, according to this source.

Here is a book about Logging Railroads in the Tionesta Valley. It will probably have much or the info that you are looking for.

Here is a map that includes the Tionesta Valley RR. Look in the upper right hand corner of the hand drawn map. There are links to USGS Topographical maps that might show greater detail. I haven’t looked at them, yet.

The railroad’s reporting mark is S&T

Thanks for all the help guys. Our local LHS owner has a book that has what he said was quite a bit of info on the little pike. Going to borrow it from him this evening and go through the pages…appreciate the pictures and maps; every little bit helps!
