Time for repairs

Back in 2004, I built Smith Pond Mill out of stone. I used cedar shingles for the roof. At the time, it looked pretty good.

Over the years, I’ve had to replace a shingle here and there. But, looking at it today, it now needs some major repairs. While I like the weathered look, it’s a bit far gone.

I don’t remember if I put any sealer on the shingles or not.

Bruce,
The shingles look as they should on an old mill building. The mill owner probably would have just repaired the damaged areas as needed. Great looking building.

Dan

Heck Bruce the stone is still in place!!
I’m sure your wizardry will have it back in shape quickly.
Dave

Bruce,

I agree with Dan, just repair the roof with the require new shingles.

Character!

Bob C.

Bruce just patch the roof up. It will give it character. That mill looks great and the flowers really look nice. Thats one of my projects to do still and mill. Where did you get the water wheel?

Hey Bruce, that’s a great looking old building with character, just replace the missing shingles and let them weather. BTW did you do a build log on this nice building?

Well, I just hope I can replace the missing shingles. I’ve cleaned it off and it’s down in the workshop, drying. We’ll see.

I did do an article: http://www.largescalecentral.com/articles/view.php?id=92

The water wheel can be obtained from RR Stoneworks: http://www.rrstoneworks.com/homepage.htm They also offer windows and doors now.

good luck on the remodel work… It’s still a beautiful building…

Make a scale “blue tarp” and cover the damage.

Well, I tried to repair it, but the whole roof is in dire need of replacement. I think I used the “scale” shingles from SPJRR.com. Yeah, they look good, and they’re just like the real thing, but they are THIN. The shingles had rotted out between the grain lines and the subroof was showing through in too many places.

So, I had a small package of shingles that I ordered from Ozark, and they are a lot thicker. I was able to remove all the old shingles from the sub roof and am now in the process of gluing the new ones in place. I think I’ll have to order another package. I also need another weather vane, as I can’t find the one that use to be on top.

Bruce not what I wonted to hear after I did the ice house. I not sure I wont to ever have to do a shingle job again like that. Building looks great. Is this the weather vane your looking for?

Geoff,
I wouldn’t worry. Those shingles are a LOT thicker than the original ones I had on the mill. I think that’s what I’m using as well.

My weather vane wasn’t painted red; but, that’s the one. I really don’t understand how it came loose.

I like the way you finished the peak.

The Smith family thanks you Bruce. It was getting a bit damp working in there! :o

Got quite a bit of deferred repair work here too now that the weather is finally getting better…light rain again today though.

It’s even wetter now, Richard. The roof is inside, while the mill sits outside. I just ordered some more shingles; it could be awhile.

Gee, I hope you at least left them with a blue tarp :)
