Thomas troublesome truck 'troublesome' loads

I have numerous Thomas ‘troublesome’ trucks and felt that they are incomplete without a load. Requiring numerous loads, I decided to make several masters and will engage a friend to produce rubber moulds. To date, I have the masters for a two hump coal load, an overfull coal load and a ‘junk’ load. By varying the colours of the load, then coal, ore, rocks or gravel may be simulated thus giving numerous different loads. The only convenient material to model these loads will be casting plaster, as resin casting is a black art generally requiring a vacuum evacuation method and materials are generally quite expensive and very unforgiving resulting in lots of wastage. The plaster casts will have a hollowed out section to minimise weight as much as possible. Depending on the outcome, I may offer excess loads for sale on eBay at sometime in the future. Bachmann will be releasing a truck with coal load at the end of the year, however, whether the load will be available as a separate part is doubtful.

Nice work!

Further to above, several more master loads have been made. I also have several others awaiting glue drying, including two styles of tent like tarpaulin covers (one the tarp is taut and the other the tarp is loosened off giving a sagging appearance), which were placed over weather sensitive goods on the prototype. Some of the styles are specific to the Thomas truck, while some may be used on other rolling stock. First off is the ‘overfull’ coal load designed to create havoc on the mainline with inevitable spillage. Second is tarped over crates, drums and an exposed packing crate. Finally, is the mandatory ‘junk’ load. If all goes to plan, some styles may finish up on eBay in the future.

Not bad at all Tim. A much needed accessory

Why wait till the end of the year for whats esentially a repaint, looks good Tim, need to add a load to mine, like the covered goods.

Sure do improve the looks. Later RJD

Further, these are my two tarped loads. First is the ‘taut’ version (painted grey as it was the only colour that I had other than black). The second is the ‘loose’ tarp and it is still in its raw state. The tarps are intended to be representative only and designed to be a temporary fitting if modeller chooses to not permanently attach to the car.
