Thomas the Tank Engine

Marklin “0” scale?

Tony,

You said “Marklin “0” scale?”

Did that mean you were questioning that Marklin made O scale?

UK and Germany O scale are the same gauge but different scale, I believe.

Last year I purchased the Lionel O size Thomas with the newer track and Thomas has a whistle …My Grandson and granddaughter have ran the set a lot , and abused it , as small kids do …, and it keeps working fine . This was my first Lionel O size train purchase , and it was so good , I have since purchased a few other sets for the biggest kid [ me ]

I just wish that the Lionel LS Atlantic , had been of this quality .

Lionel's Gauge 1 Thomas and James are OK if you don't expect them to pull like an SD70. Leastwise, I haven't had problems with mine.

Not like an SD70, but expecting it to be able to pull 4 or 5 2 axle cars on level track, without stripping the bloody gears, shouldn't be an unreasonable expectation, should it?
I've had them up to four cars, though admittedly not for long periods of time. I'm planning to put together some of HLW's mini freight cars to replace Lionel's Troublesome Trucks. The HLW cars aren't "British", of course, but the TTs are even less so (very few "bogie" wagons in Britain, relative to four-wheelers), and the HLWs will allow me to have more cars in the same length of train (which is sharply limited by passing loop length). The HLWs are a lot less expensive than British kits, too.

David,

That is a most informative site. That was the type of info I was looking for and probably a lot more info than I wanted to know. Thank you for the link.

If you do have a craving for more, do let us know!

Hi, my name is Mik and I’m a Thomas-aholic :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks David,

I’ve got a grandson that is totally engrossed and of course this makes good conversation for all of us. Anything that is good, please pass along. I find it very educating and entertaining. I can’t help but look at the the episodes with a model railroader’s eye, as I’m sure many do.

Ric ,
come on , you don’t need that old excuse , we all like watching it . The benefits of the modelling techniques are just a bonus .
Mike

Oh Mike,

I do enjoy watching them, but after the 8th time, I get past the story line, but Luke wants it to keep running. I’ve been trying to figure out the track plans.

Hello,… My name is Cale… and My family and I are addicted to Thomas!

We watch on a regular (daily) basis here at home. 2 boys, 3 (Eli)and 19mo(Luke)…

For the boys Thomas is the favorite with Percy coming in a close 2nd. I personally adore Toby and have almost finished a 1:20.3 Batt version of him. I also like all of the “little” engines on the Narrow Gauge Line.

Most recently there is a new twist to the Island of Sodor, construction trucks and tractors…they were featured last year on 2 episodes and now have a full DVD-On Site with Thomas, which is a nice break from Railfanning on Sodor. Alfie and Jack are the favs there…

Daily…I watch with the boys and enjoy…It keeps us all “into” trains…We DVR PBS each week that a new episode comes on, and have a ton on DVD/VHS too!

Sometimes Thomas is the only thing that will calm my youngest…

Yeah, we are Thomas-holics and that is just ok with me!

The program and “seeing” a big train fueled my wonder-lust with the G world…

…One Day-a Live Steamer Thomas for Dad!!!I have seen one someone did and it was a beauty!

Well , Ric ,
It takes me ten viewings to get the plot , I’m so busy trying to work out which locos they’ve used as a basis , and how many layouts or part layouts they’ve got . I do know it must be nearly the perfect job to work on that .
The other amusing thing is to go to preserved railways here and see how many of them have a store with Glass Fibre Smokebox Fronts of all the Thomas Characters . Clean , polished , and ready to go at the call of the fat controller .

Call him the Fat Controller in the US and nobody will know who you are talking about!

Very un-PC, too many pie eaters I guess!

You don’t mean you get the thing censored , do you ? Without the original sound track with the Beatle speaking it , half the jokes won’t make sense .
That’s one of the great things about it , it is something to watch with the kids where you don’t get embarrassed . It is also educational , kids learn a lot about right and wrong watching the series . It ought to be compulsory viewing .

I would need to check, but I was thinking back to the books, TV came much much later for me.

I am pretty sure he was always the Fat Controller, aka Sir Henry Toppham. But it was 40 odd years ago.

I got this linky poo in an Email…To say the least its interesting and appropriate!

Early VHS episodes refer to him as the Fat Controler…later…ummmm, No.

and I have noticed that “Christmas” isn’t used too much anymore either, it’s winter celebration on most later episodes…

Another sacred institution being destroyed by the “do gooders”.

A protective prayer to fight off the impact of political correctness -

God save me from the “good people”. My enemies only want to kill me, but the “good people” want to change me.

I am fairly sure it is only the later Region 1 DVD’s that changed, all the others have the correct language.

Now why they did it is another issue.
