This is madness!

That’s great

I’ve been wondering how to improve my pace!

One of my favorite movies is “American Flyers,” about two brothers who race bicycles. While training for a race, one tells the other that today they are going to go sprint with Eddie. After a long ride over “rolling hills” the younger brother asks the older brother when they will catch up with Eddie. Big brother says, “Just over the next hill.” As they crest the hill, big brother starts yelling Eddie, Eddie, and whistling, and here comes Eddie running down the long country driveway to meet them.

Eddie is a pissed off pitbull.

“Sprinting with Eddie.”

13 miles tomorrow.

Practice half-marathon August 10.

Wait a minute, what do you think 13 miles are?

I think 13 miles are why cars were invented…

Tomorrow is a long training run. The 10th is a half-marathon practice “race.” If you can call what we do, “race.”

Going 26 miles without a car still seems like madness, though possible madness.

Whew!

More tiring than running 13 miles was the 2 1/2 hour drive home. ALL Chicago northbound highways were a standstill yesterday.

Should have just got out and run home
Ralph

So you made it? Congratulations!!!

Made it? Home? Yup.

Chicago Distance Classic tomorrow. Got my number and everything

They’re having a drawing for a cute Saturn car. I filled out the entry, but I find it here amongst my papers and such. Guess I won’t be winning a Saturn :frowning:

Official time in Chicago Distance Classic: 2:58:47. 8128th place out of 8740 finishers. The photos aren’t indexed by number yet. Somebody needs to look at each one and find the bib number. I was 9875. I ran with the 3 hour “Pace Group” until about mile 11 when I ran out of oomph and let them get ahead. A couple minutes later there was an African-American angel with a bag of pretzels. That helped a lot and I finished at a good run. The second place finisher was Jose Munoz, also of Team World Vision. 1:10:12, just a few seconds behind Greg Costello at 1:09:54. I have this great big medal.

Now, I have 2 months to double the distance. http://www.firstgiving.com/tomruby A video: http://www.worldvision.org/get_involved.nsf/child/metro_chicago_programs_teamwv_video

The goal was to finish and you did that with pride. Good job!

Now we wait for Tuesday’s report, two days later is when the pain really hits.

Congrats Tom

I was even an hour ahead of the “balloon cuties.”

You can’t be last in this race. They hire people to be last. They walk along the course with boquets of balloons. Some years ago, the Chicago Police nicnamed them “balloon cuties.” They were about a hundred yards behind the last of the runners. I’m told sometimes they pull pranks to be sure they’re the very last.

15 miles tomorrow. 2 months to double my distance.

It's a sickness!

15 didn’t go so well yesterday. Pooped out just before 12 and limped in. But then, I wasn’t last and I still did my usual 15 minute miles. Wonder if that’s what they call, “Positive Splits.”

16 next week.

Wow, just 5 months ago there was no way I could run 1 mile.

16 didn’t go very well either. Since fleet-feet is nearby, I stopped in to see if they had any suggestions. Turns out I’d worn out my running shoes. So I have a fresh pair. Sunday and Monday are rest days, so I’ll try them out on 4 miles Tuesday morning.
