We got flare ups and more smoke but I saw six firetrucks go by and a helicopter so coverage looks far greater than yesterday
i’m happy for you, that you can write: “has been”
Vic,
I am just seeing this thread. Thanks for taking the time to update us amidst the chaos. I am glad to hear you were spared. I cannot imagine the fear and relief given the surrounding devastation.
Eric
Vic,
You stay safe my friend!
Material items can be replaced or rebuilt unlike Steve Austin Million Dollar man a human cannot!
you had an equally ugly fire on a neighboring island
So much tragedy surrounding you Vic, but I’m relieved that you and yours are safe.
Dude, you’re pretty famous for all your amazing “pizza layout” builds, I’ve been following them when we where both on MLS and after that when we cut over to LSC after the Chad-photo-newcompany fiasco. And we’ve all been enjoying your more recent “new reckless experimentation”.
Of course, there are other far more important matters. But I’m glad that your decades of artwork also survived.
Tim,
Equal in terms of the totality of destruction in the impacted areas (Lahaiana is simply gone), but nowhere near as widespread. The numbers displaced in CA are at least equal to the total population of Maui.
Eric
Update, as of today we’re downgraded from Evacuation Order to Evacuation Warning, which takes us outside of the curfew zone, and proof there are still good people in this world. A group of teenagers showed up from out of nowhere to clean up the leaves and branches on the street. They asked if I I had any bags so they could keep going, I gave them 2 boxes and any extras I had. God bless them. The joke about me always finishing the Mike first might be given a running challenge. Given the past couple days , so I may be off to very late start. I can certainly use the distraction that’s for sure.
Hey Vic, what part of town are you in? I’m on the west side of altadena. our house survived initially but we have been unable to get back in. Lincoln ave seemed like the line where FD held, but so much devastation. Entire blocks are just gone. It’s awful.
Rancho bar which had many Pacific Electric and Mt. Lowe RR artifacts is gone.
Any word on the Christmas Tree Lane layout?
I’m just south of you opposite Muir High. I heard some homes on Christmas Tree Lane were lost but no update on the train layout. Have you gone to the app “Watch Duty”? They have a map that shows the fires extent. Where are you located?
Lincoln and Harriet. Across from engine 12. I was in OC for work when it all went down. Wife and I got in Wednesday and our house was still there. Some damage but our neighborhood is devastated. East on Harriet is gone, some houses on our side are destroyed but most of west of Lincoln seemed ok. We’ve been refused entry since Wednesday by Guard, but I’m ok with the military and police presence given the general state of the area.
Really sorry to hear guys.
We’re in Orange County and while there are no local fires (yet anyways), and we can’t see or smell smoke, we’ve been there done that in the past.
We’ve have had numerous power outages and when I went to get gas for my generator the other morning, several stoplights were out, as was the power at the gas station. I found another and after I filled my generator, I found I have a dead battery. I have one on order and hope it doesn’t go down again before it arrives next week. Then hopefully it starts.
Take care and hope for the best.
My experience with Watch Duty is its not accurate. The fire last June in Ruidoso NM where we have an old historic mountain cabin it showed us clearly in the red and a good ways around us. When finally got it, we and neighbors around us fine. Maybe 10 houses up the canyon, total devastation. But from there down into town fine. But watching that map we were expecting the worst. My point is the map is not an absolute from my experience.
Geez Patrick thank God your home was okay. Let’s hope this next round of winds blows over us. It’s supposed to be a traditional Santa Ana affecting the canyons east and west of us. We don’t have gas, they shut it down to cap lines at damaged homes. We don’t know when it will return, the window was 1 to 3 weeks. As our neighbor said, no gas is better than no house.
Hi Mickey, yeah it’s a little misleading but if you read the fine print it has a disclaimer that states the red fire extent doesn’t represent if any building was damaged, destroyed, or spared. It’s a representation of where fire or fire activity was reported. I noticed in the neighborhood around us that even though red was shown some houses were still okay. We still lost far too many and Palisades is still going. I heard on the news that there hasn’t been a fire there in 50 years, back before there was so much development up there, so there was a lot of fuel in the hills when it started.
How many appliances do you have on gas? If it’s going to be weeks it might be worth looking into seeing if you can find propane replacement nozzles? And run off propane. My parents run everything off propane and it’s pretty easy to swap out on the stove the two different types. Not sure how connecting/disconnecting from the gas line would be.
That’s one thing I’ve never thought about on a gas appliance house incae of an earthquake I always figure we wouldn’t have any utilities.
Hi Craig, Gas Co was absolutely adamant about not doing something like that. It was specifically singled out in their notice. It’s okay last night the temperature inside stayed around 65 dropping to 60 at sunrise. For cooking we have 2 electric toaster ovens and a microwave. We have electric room heaters we can use but temps are projected to be very mild. It’s heating enough hot water to take camp showers that’s going to be a challenge. I’m considering using my patio BBQ to heat up a bucket of water. We shall see.
That stinks but I get the gas company knows something the general public doesn’t.
We get occasional wind storms with power outages in the fall here in the Seattle area and I always love having a warm shower and a fireplace with gas. I’m trying to convince my wife to go to a gas range ( I’ve got the piping all done).
Quick camping showers are definitely doable but not fun. But better than not having a place to stay…
Keep an eye out for airborne debris if the winds shifts back to your direction, my sister and brother in law last year were 2 miles away from the Medical Lake fire in Spokane, WA and when they returned home they found fist sized 2x4 burnt in the backyard! Crazy how far it traveled.
Both my wife and I were able to take time off work so we are down the coast for a few days until we can get in. Once we get back to a semblance of normalcy, I’d love to show you my layout if it still stands.
