I found this on You Tube and really enjoyed it. This fella is really have a good time with his home built Shay.

Here is the “back story” from You Tube:

"This video was shot in 1999 on live steam railroad in Ann Arbor, MI. The line was built as a narrow gauge line. The track was 12 inch gauge and the equipment was built to 1/3 scale. There was about a mile of track through a valley next to the house. There was also a line being built around the house, that was never finished because the owner passed away.

The rail line through and around the valley was torn out after the land was sold to a developer. The line around the house was being built to replace that.

The locomotives included two Shay locomotives that, except for the boilers were home built. The other two engines were 4-4-0’s that were bought second hand. Those engines will be seen in a future video. The shays had steam brakes just like the real ones did / do. There was also provision to add air brakes, but that never happened."

That’s cool

Very cool

Wow that’s cool.

If you are up to seeing more of this very cool outdoor RR, here is some more.I particularly like the overgrown rails and roadbed and the tight winding curves of this recreation of logging reality. He did a great job showing how a real logging outfit must have looked like.

Oh my! when I win the lottery, I want one of them.

And did you notice the rails are over-sized on his “garden” railroad too?

Over-sized because of the loads.

…winking…

Me and pal Broos opine that THE definitive fun loco for our new 7.25" gauge track just HAS to be a Shay.

And, BTW, our new track at Ramsey Mereside wes declared open yesterday by Lord de Ramsey, the local lord, and here a few figures for you -

Between the hours of 1045am and 4pm, I stopped off my loco, a 1/3rd scale model of the Ffestiniog Railway’s ‘Harlech Castle’ just twice for a comfort break, and hauled around 900 passengers, covering an actual mileage not far short of nineteen miles doing it. As the steamer started earlier, that got the lion’s share of the 2200 BOS [butts-on-seats] on the day.

Neither my loco nor the other - a live-steamer ‘Romulus’ suffered any mechanical hassle of any kind. Because I was driving, I’m relying on others to post video’s but there should be some coming on YT soon.

Hi Tac,

Looking forward to those videos. Interestingly this shay was built in 1/3 scale also. Live steamers look like a whole lot of fun.

Enjoy!..7 -1/4" Darj loco.

I could spend all day playing with this!!
The black cylindrical thing on the side near where the steam is coming out is a dummy steam turbogenerator . It will be replaced with a real one for powering the lights.

Ross,

Those are very nice videos. This 1/3 scale is pretty sharp. You can sit inside the cab and yet tow the lokie behind an econo car. Nifty.

Doc Tom

Hey Doc,

These videos are really good. Thanks for sharing. Looks like the old guy really achieved his dream of building and running his railroad.
