I have spent the last few days otherwise occupied , mainly catching up reading my military modelling magazines .
Which reminded me why I had stopped reading them and just look at the pictures instead --they get some good prototype pictures in them , and good adverts .
BUT , the write ups , oh my goodness , how these blokes struggle to outdo each other in words to decribe a model’s good (if any) points .
So , how’s about starting a collection of words which actually mean (to me ) something entirely different to what’s
intended , for example :
"subtle weathering "----- paint slapped on with no regard for what weathering really looks like .
"stunning "---- yeah , right , I fell over laughing .
"realistic rust effect " -----brown and red paint applied to aluminium armour .
" beautiful castings "-----bits of brass .
Or am I being unkind ?

I had to go check to make sure Clambake didn’t publish any Military Modelling mags.
Those descriptive phrases sound like they are right out of the Clambake reveiwer’s employee handbook…

Somehow, “Cool!” needs to suffice. It’s funny how journalists pick up cool words. For a while, EVERYBODY’s efforts were described as “Quixotic” in print. Now, we pronounce this as “Kehotic” in English, being derived from Don Quixote in Cervante’s book. Sure enough, before long, somebody on the radio said, “quix…” I snickered all the way home after hearing that one.
One of my favorite military modelling terms is “well placed rubble”

Real meaning: “You won’t like it but we’ve found a cheaper way to do it and maybe we can snooker a few of you into believing it’s an improvement for you because we care.”

My favorite ones from real-estate that I encountered while searching for our current home:
“Backs to green space” = Power lines in back yard
“Close to interstate” = Exit ramp in side yard
“Convenient to shopping” = Supermarket across the street
“Private back yard” = okay, no neighbors behind you, but there’s that small matter of the 6-lane road.
Needless to say, we passed on those houses.

So do I. 
Of course they have been in business for sooooooooo long that they must be doing it right. Hehehehehe!
Besides, their circulation outstrips anyone else in the business.
But getting it right, well, that’s another matter. 
BTW over on “that other place” someone very gently explained to some of the “Twits” why there is a difference in reviews (not within the same publishing outfit!).

Corporate culture - now that’s a “good” term - sees to it that there’s “consistency”. What is yet to be decided is how thick it really needs to be. Remember the “If you can’t dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit!” saying?
Well, if you insert “or serve up some hard facts” between “brilliance” and “baffle” it gets even closer to what’s cooking!
