Large Scale Central

There are always alternatives

… but instead of revamping the complete footprint of the “Cascade & Silverton” layout sample, I’ll do just a bit of fiddling with a number of items. First one: round those corners along the fascia, inside with a 2ft rad outside with a 1ft rad.

Next step: “Bitteroot Mine”

From what I’ve seen of Colorado mining ops they seem to have built a loading siding if space allowed it. Chances that there’s more than one mine within a relatively short distance are pretty good. In this case East and West of town; since they’re in opposite corners of the room there is “some distance”.

Two mines that need to be switched. Last modification will be the track arrangement in town. Looking at the original track plan I’m still not clear if this is supposed to be a junction (?). Apropos pictures, there is some neat stuff to be found htt://

I left the “p” out of http, this is a large picture. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

That’s how I would arrange the tracks in town. Being able to turn the engines and the Geese could come in handy. The West leg of the Wye could also be used for car storage. The main track (South side) is available as a through track even if engines are accessing and leaving the service area inside the Wye.

All in all more motion without additional commotion! The industries and other structures in town remain as before. What else would I have added? In the long tangent under the stairs I’d have added a passing siding.

Great improvements HJ, like the idea of a passing siding under the stairs as well. To store a train.

Thanks Randy,

When I started reading that article the first paragraph made me look for the track plan. Then I read the article at least three times to be sure I understood correctly. Case in point the mention of the Accucraft K28 needing 10ft radius curves. Checked on their website where it mentions 4ft minimum radius. I based the revamped track plan on that. But since I believe in wide curves are a good thing, all but the West leg of the Wye and the curve at the stock pen have a mainline radius of 5ft.
Track is based on Llagas turnouts and their flex, using Y turnouts helps in a few spots. As the saying goes: “Many ways to skin a cat” in order to arrive at more operating possibilities and a railroad that, despite being a basic roundy-round, has a bit of a purpose - other than taking nice pictures.

Since the 14ft by 34ft dimensions were mentioned more than once in that article, I have a notion to design something for that restrictive space.
