The waterfall pump arrived

To try it out, I dropped it straight in the pond to see how much turbulence it would create.

Plenty! Before I start on the waterfall I need to finish the stream from the small to the larger pond. Update on the ducks: after they got chased off the second time they got the message. Nope there won’t be fish in the pond, the blue herons would be regular visitors - at least that’s what happened at the neighbour’s.

That’s too bad no fish. Your close to a lake too are’nt you ?
What are the pipes coming out of the ground for ?

Bryan, Yes, we’re practically right on the lake. Out the backgate down the hill we’re at the beach. The “no fish” is not cast in stone, we’ll play it by ear. The pipes are for ladder roadbed. Finished roughing in the stream and tried if water flows downhill. YEP, it does.  Used an old pondliner as the underpad, new liner on top.

SWMBO asked for some pools along the stream bed. (YES DEAR!)

Next will be gluing the liner overlaps, adding gravel, the boulders and semi-finishing the banks. Digging the trench produced a bit more dirt for other “things”. The waterfall filter unit should be here early next week, more fun with water!

Will you end in a waterfall into the lower pool?

Perhaps you could put in some sharper corners in the streambed, to make it more interesting?

OK, I’ll go to my room, now.

Oh, yeah. Looks good.

Steve,

There wasn’t enough room for that meandering water, but doing the old “judicious placing of stones” in the stream and on the banks will fix that to some degree. Placed some nice smooth round rocks in the pond to hide the feeder hose for the stream.

The waterfall into the pond will happen from a different direction, the watercourse will cross the rail line twice, two tunnels will take care of that.

Most of the landscaping work that happens right now is all about creating visual dividers and justifications why the railway would reverse direction twice before heading out of that particular section of the “Valley”.

I think the pools along the stream are a good idea. They really add to the effect. My brother-in-law just finished a waterfall for his large pond. I saw it this weekend, but there are no real drops or pools. Even though he has a big pump, the water just runs out over the rocks and diminishes the effect. He’s already planning to redo it.

I put a relatively small pump on my biggest pond and have it spill out over a large rock. The rock hangs out over the pond. The water flow spreads out about a foot, and then drops about a foot down into the pond. Simple effect, but it looks and sounds like a waterfall would.

I look forward to seeing the finished stream. Looks good so far!

The waterfall filter unit arrived too, the rain held off long enough to get the planned stuff done. Among that: someone (who was it?) suggested running the flex hose in a PVC pipe for easy retrieval and protection from digging implements. So I did, anything to make things service friendly!

The filter unit for the stream will get covered with an artifical hill complete with church and grave yard. Started filling the stream with gravel and stone. SWMBO had a few suggestions, sooooo … “By all means dear, feel free to rearrange the rocks whichever way you like!”   One store has a sale (starts Friday) on dwarf Albert spruce, gotta get some for around the upper pond. As I say, one step at a time!

Got that waterfall filter installed yesterday, before it started to really rain (OK, really rain in Okanagan Style, not WetCoast).

Temp installation, the perm place will be behind the fence on top and the water will cascade down the hill. That will be a slightly bigger job than the stream. Need to build the ridge first, two tunnels for the railway and then the water course. Plenty of material to move!

Wow, a stream AND a waterfall feature. That going to going to very impressive. You have a great spot with the hill next to the pond. That will save you a lot of time moving dirt. I built my large pond by digging out the side of a slope and piling the dirt up on the low side. When your digging a four foot deep pond, it’s a lot easier than going straight down.

Thank you Paul. On the walk this morning I came to the conclusion that I need: 4 yards of topsoil and a whole bunch of rock. The garden builder is supposed to drop by this evening - for the front of the house stuff - I should be able to find out how much stuff he’ll have to remove to do the planned changes. That won’t be going anywhere but on the GRR.

If possible save money, time and running around. The garden builder will deliver “extra stuff” for the GRR. That leaves me with the task of shoveling and running the wheelbarrow, not bad, not bad. He had a few suggestions, too, i.e. getting rid of the pesky grass in all the wrong places.

Best part is: he’s starting the job on Monday, perfect timing. That means I can get on with my stuff at the same time.
