The V&T Gets Her Reno Back!

Here’s some good railroady news!

The Reno, #11, has been one of the V&T’s most favorite locos, and the last of her 4-4-0’s.

In 1937 she began her movie career, in 1945 being sold to Loews / MGM. In 1969 the Reno portrayed the UP 119 in a recreation of golden spike ceremonies.

In 1970 #11 was sold to Old Tucson Studios in AZ, made more movies there, and ran tourist trains. But in 1995 she was badly damaged by a big fire there. She was cosmetically semi-restored, and has mainly been parked in the Arizona sun ever since.

Of course, V&T fans have long been wanting to see the Reno returned home. And when OTS closed its doors last year, some light began to shine in that tunnel. Yesterday, the news began to unofficially come out, that the Reno had been trucked to Virginia City! Along with other important V&T car bits & pieces.

This is unofficial, but word has it that the Gray family, rebuilder and owner of the current Virginia and Truckee Railroad (the part operating between Virginia City and Gold Hill) acquired the Reno. And they intend to restore her appearance at least.

I’ll post photos when I get permission, or when some are posted publicly. And if you have pics, please post them here!

[edit] Just saw this video, posted 8 hours ago: Goes over the whole story.

For us V&T fans at least, this is all very happy news!!

I agree, not yet, and I really want to! I followed that loco’s recreation for some time, as part of the Lincoln funeral train I believe. Just haven’t gotten my butt up there yet!

Cliff that is great news, hopefully they will restore it to operation.

This fall perhaps ?

BTW…I don’t even like steam!

Wouldn’t that be amazing Rick? I suppose the main cost would be a new boiler, and then rebuilding all the bits.

I’m not in the know here, but I hope the various interested organizations get behind this, and that sufficient funds will eventually materialize.

We just need someone to win the Power Ball…

Yea, the boiler is the biggie for expense.

This is a photo taken yesterday by my friend John in Virginia City:

Nice photo, looks better than I expected. I might be getting mixed up with another loco, but wasn’t this one involved in a fire that took it out of service? If so, it must have had some work done to have the wood cab look that good.

Yes, Jon, it was damaged in a fire and partially restored for display purposes.

Cliff are you positive that’s not a Ray Dunakin creation ?

Nope Ray can make anything ( model) look very old and decrepid …

Cliff plastic buildings …just an example…

Yea, the boiler is the biggie for expense.

A cool $1Million bucks should do it.

I was slow on the uptake Sean, and I totally agree. You and I are probably both questioning more and more prototype photos, wondering if it’s another work of Mr. Dunakin.

To paraphrase an old Memorex ad, “Is it Real, or is it Ray?”

Indeed. Or $2m to be sure. So here’s the pitches I’d make:

  • City of Reno: Your namesake is calling for you to bring her back and let her run!! (this could be REALLY strung out for sure)
  • Carson City: You were picked as the state capitol when the V&T ran #11 from Reno to Virginia, and you happened to be in the middle. C’mon, get with it and pay your dues!! (big ditto!!)
  • State of Nevada: Here’s your chance to revive the beating heart of the industrial revolution, and make all other states bow in awe! (ok, that’s a little over the top, but there’s a lot there even when toned down)
  • Las Vegas, NV: OK, who wants to bet that your name will be engraved in back of the new drivers? (have to work on that, but I know there’s material there…)
